Bobcats split doubleheader with Augusta State

The Georgia College & State University baseball team upset 16th-ranked Augusta State University 3-2 in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader as the No. 21 Bobcats snapped the Jaguars’ 20-game winning streak at home.
ASU won game one of the doubleheader 5-3 to win the Peach Belt Conference series after opening with a 7-5 victory on Friday.
GC&SU (23-15, 9-9 PBC) opened game one with a 1-0 lead after Nick Trainor hit an RBI single to score Jose Leger. ASU (27-9, 12-6 PBC) answered in the fifth with four runs on four hits and a Bobcat error as Sam Barth led the way with a double down the left field line to plate two runs and give the Jaguars a 4-1 advantage. Mike DeVeaux scored one run back in the sixth with a solo home run to left field before Barth plated another run in the seventh. Trailing 5-2 in the ninth, pinch hitter Hans Stancil nailed a two-out shot over the right field wall, but the next batter was retired to end the game.
Justin Walker (5-3) picked up the win for ASU after allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits in eight complete innings, while Cody Williams shut down the Bobcats in the final inning to earn his ninth save. Billy Leigh (4-4) took the loss for GC&SU after allowing five runs, one unearned, on five hits in six complete innings. Nick Trainor went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Bobcats at the plate.
In the second game, the Bobcats opened the second inning with back-to-back singles by John Caruso and Nick Trainor before Dan Habel hit an RBI single to centerfield to plate Caruso and take the 1-0 lead. Starter Matt Goyen looked to be cruising as he gave up three hits in the first three innings before ASU’s Bennett Mayfield nailed a two-run shot to left center in the fourth to put the Jaguars up 2-1. GC&SU quickly regained the lead in the fifth as Bret Benson doubled to right center and scored on an RBI single by Jose Leger. John Caruso later plated Leger on a sacrifice fly for the go ahead run. ASU threatened to score in the sixth with runners on second and third with one out, but Travis Spell entered the game and retired the next two batters with back-to-back strikeouts. In the seventh, Chris Demons led off with a triple before Spell came through again with two more strikeouts and a pop-up to hold on for the 3-2 victory.
Buck (1-3) picked up the win after only giving up three hits in 2.1 innings of work, while Spell earned his second save of the season, pitching the final 1.2 innings. Brett Chandler (0-1) took the loss for the Jaguars after allowing two runs on two hits in two complete innings.
