Women win fifth straight match
Women
The No. 7 ranked Georgia College & State University women’s tennis team won its fifth straight match with an 8-1 victory at No. 28 USC Spartanburg on Saturday. The GC&SU men’s tennis team was not as fortunate in the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader as the No. 26 ranked Bobcats fell 6-1 to No. 14 ranked USC Spartanburg.
In women’s play, GC&SU (12-3, 8-2 PBC) took a 3-0 lead after doubles and cruised to the 8-1 victory. GC&SU’s Luiza Biktyakova and Chenelle Kruger defeated Mariana Melo and Zarah DeSilva 85 at No.1 doubles, while Anna Davidsson and Anna Shchupak knocked off Dasha Segenchuk and Nina Lesnanska 86 at No. 2. GC&SU won the third doubles point by default.
In singles play, Biktyakova defeated Segenchuk 46, 61, 61 at No. 1, while Shchupak defeated Melo 36, 64, 76 at No. 2. Kruger won her No. 4 singles match over Paloma Castillo 64, 61, while Davidsson defeated Lesnanska 63, 63 at No. 5. The Rifles picked up their only point of the match at No. 3 singles where DeSilva defeated Rachael Porsz 60, 76.
In men’s action, GC&SU (10-6, 3-5 PBC) dropped its third straight match, all conference matches, after falling 6-1. The Bobcats fell behind early, after dropping two out of three doubles matches. James Gorin and Rodrigo Yamauti picked up the only point of the day for GC&SU, with a 9-7 victory over Diego Sist and Ben Ureta at No. 1 doubles. USC Spartanburg’s David Gustafsson and Aly Mandour defeated GC&SU’s Thomas Karlsson and Per Schartum-Hansen 8-3 at No.2, and Jose Luis Reyes teamed with Stefan Dumitrescu to knock off GC&SU’s Brandon Lee and Mikael Pettersson 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
Sist defeated Gorin 6-3;7-5 at No. 1 singles, while Reyes defeated Yamauti 6-2;6-2 at No. 2. Ureta held off Pettersson 6-1;4-6;6-4 at No. 3, while Gustafsson held off Schartum-Hansen in three sets 6-3;1-6;6-2 at No. 4 singles. The other two singles matches were not completed due to darkness.
Men
The Georgia College & State University men’s tennis team bounced back from a three game slide in a big way, defeating 15th-ranked Northwood University 5-0, Sunday afternoon at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility.
The Bobcats got off to a good start by sweeping the three doubles matches, then won the first two singles matches to clinch the win.
In doubles play, GC&SU’s (11-6, 3-5 PBC) Rodrigo Yamauti and James Gorin defeated Northwood’s Florian Backnick and Marcus Blumberg 8-5 at No.1, while Thomas Karlsson and Per Schartum-Hansen paired up for an 8-2 victory at No. 2 over Gerrit Lotz and Christian Thiemann. Brandon Lee and Mikael Pettersson completed the doubles sweep for the Bobcats at No. 3, with a hard fought 9-8 win over Marcel Galik and Bastien Labarta.
In singles play, Pettersson defeated Blumberg at No. 3, while Mariano Cebrian won at No. 6 against Galik, after retiring due to injuries for the 5-0 win.
Both GC&SU teams travel to Valdosta State on Tuesday.
