The Voice

About this time of year an epidemic spreads like wildfire through colleges and universities around the globe. This pandemic ravages entire populations at a speed that is virtually incalculable. The disease we speak of … Senioritis.
Although millions of dollars have been spent tracking this legendary laziness, a concrete remedy has escaped our country’s most brilliant minds.
Symptoms of this devastating malady include a lack of motivation to complete school work, the desire to avoid doing anything that even remotely resembles school work and the realization that the last few decades of your life have been spent doing – you guessed it – school work.
The warm weather and beautiful sunshine brought on by this time of year does nothing to help the general level of slacking that sets in with Senioritis. In fact, as the temperature rises, fighting off the symptoms of this affliction becomes hopeless.
The task of completing senior level course work and simultaneously looking for a job in a barren economy often seems an insurmountable feat. This, coupled with the sudden realization that we will be living away from our best friends for the first time in years, leaves many students feeling pretty down.
Most of us also have to find the time to balance classes and assignments with our work schedules. And when it comes time to choose which area will be our highest priority, it is easy to see that doing homework doesn’t pay the bills – at least not yet. We know the school work will pay off in the future, but this is a hard learned realization.
Highs in the mid 70s and friends who are always willing to do something crazy probably does not help loosen the grip of Senioritis, but you may want to think twice when considering whether you should blow off Spanish class or skip a day of Senior Seminar. Giving in to the grip of Senioritis may sound like a welcome vacation, and we agree that we could all use a break. However, don’t let this plague put receiving your college diploma in jeopardy.
To all Seniors, make the most of your last month in college. Senioritis can’t last forever, but the memories you make in these last days will.
