The Spice of life

The other day I was listening to the radio and Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn” began to play. Immediately, I was taken back to my early high school years when this song first became popular. It got me thinking about how music plays such a vital role in my life and how certain tunes have the ability to take me back to another time and place.
Of course there are songs by New Kids on the Block, Tommy Page, Tiffany and Milli Vanilli that never fail to take me back to my days in elementary school. I had older sisters, and because I copied whatever they did, I liked to think that I was pretty cool when it came to my taste in music back then.
Ace of Base songs have a way of taking me back to middle school. Whether it was “The Sign,” “All That She Wants” or “Beautiful Life,” I can’t help but remember how my friends and I passed notes as we changed classes or how grown up we felt, despite the fact that we were only in 6th or 7th grade.
I think I will always love “…Baby, One More Time” by Britney Spears. Everytime I hear it, I remember how much my friends and I wanted to be just like Britney. With her sassy music videos and fun dance moves, Britney’s influence led me and my friends to re-enact her videos in our high school hallway. Even when I hear the songs now, I can remember most of the choreography to all of her early videos.
Who remembers the Tim McGraw song, “Something Like That?” The song where Tim sings of having a barbecue stain on his white t-shirt was my favorite song the summer before I started college in 2000. Whenever I hear it now, I remember coasting down the road with my friends, singing at the top of our lungs as we played Tim McGraw’s CD.
When I think back on this school year, many of my memories are tied to certain songs. Whenever I hear Clay Aiken’s “Invisible,” I can’t help but laugh. Although my friend and I are big fans of Clay, when we first heard that song, we rolled our eyes at the cheesy lyrics. In the future, when I hear that song, I will remember how overplayed it was on MTV’s TRL, and how despite the corny single, I still insisted on owning the album. I also think the song “Where is the Love?” by the Black Eyed Peas has held a lot of memories for me this year. When I hear it, I think of dancing around my apartment with my roommates, acting silly as we played it on our CD player. Those were good times.
Other songs that bringback memories from this school year include any song on the “Moulin Rouge” soundtrack, Fefe Dobson’s “Take Me Away,” Three Doors Down’s “Here Without You” and the new Usher song, “Yeah!” Each song has a special memory attached to it, even if it is something as simple as a road trip or a song that was a favorite for my friends and me.
It amazes me how powerfully music can impact people’s lives. Our CD sleeves become like pages of a scrapbook as we flip through the pages and reflect on what particular songs meant to us throughout the years. What songs will remind you of your time at Georgia College & State University? I hope the memories you have from this year are ones that will make you smile when a tune comes on the radio that reminds you of your time at GC&SU.
