Local band comes to campus
Gabriel Young, a hot new band out of Athens, will be performing on the front campus of Georgia College & State University Wednesday, April 7 at 8 p.m.
Gabriel Young is a band comprised of two young men, Gabriel Zorbanos and Kalen Young Nash. Their music consists of acoustic guitars and original lyrics and delivers a sound that is a combination of folk, jazz, pop, singer/songwriter and R&B.
Pam Tolbert, senior management of information systems major, has been a fan of the band since the first time she heard them play in Athens.
“Gabriel Young really drew me in as a fan with their high energy instrumentals and soulfulness,” Tolbert said. “They have something special when they come together to perform that other musicians often have trouble finding. They just have this passion, this drive and the heart to continue to the next level as a band. They really compliment one another both musically and vocally.”
Tolbert enjoyed the band’s performance in Athens so much that she talked to Ronald Lunk, assistant director of student activities at GC&SU, about booking Gabriel Young to perform at GC&SU.
“Anytime we have a student or faculty who recommends a group to come, we try to work something out,” Lunk said. “This band is different from the groups that we usually bring to campus. I thought it would cater to a different crowd of students.”
“From what I have seen at other shows, they have a wide audience appeal,” Tolbert said. “I thought they would connect well with GC&SU students.”
Gabriel Zorbanos is a classical guitar major at the University of Georgia. He spent a year in Sweden studying music and honing his skills on the guitar. Kalen Young Nash is finishing up his senior year at Madison County High School in Danielsville, GA. The guys have known one another for ten years. Living only a mile apart, they both had a passion for music and an interest in guitars. They have been playing together as Gabriel Young for three months.
Though they have yet to be signed to a record label, the band has been receiving attention through playing at colleges, universities, bars and anywhere they can be seen by big crowds.
“They have a unique sound, and they are really talented,” Lunk said. “A lot of people will be more interested in their music once they hear them perform.”
The band also has a website where fans can check out clips of their music, find out the band’s tour schedule and learn more about the guys. Those interested should check out www.gabrielyoung.com for more information.
“I really think GC&SU students will enjoy what Gabriel Young has to offer as far as their vocals and guitar skills,” Tolbert said. “The band puts on a great show, and I encourage everyone to come and check out the music for themselves.”
