It’s your right to know
By Friday afternoon, the Georgia College & State University campus becomes a deserted town. The streets are quiet and front campus is bare. The tranquility is due to the fact that most people leave on the weekends. A good portion of the students go back home or visit other college campuses where they have more things to do. Other campuses are more student oriented than GC&SU’s Milledgeville campus. Not many activities are available for students to attend on the weekends, and as a result, students leave to find fun.
It is sometimes great to go to a school that is just far enough away from home to feel independent, but close enough to go home for some t.l.c. It’s not a huge commitment to leave for one day and come back a couple of days later; as a result of this convenience, Milledgeville is a peaceful town Friday through Sunday.
We can all pretty much agree that there are rarely any organized events to attend. Other than an occasional baseball game on west campus or a play being performed at night, this place is pretty dead. Sometimes CAB puts on programs, but those programs aren’t what the average student finds interesting. It’s not a huge secret that the events are boring; if you were to look at the turnout you could easily see this is true. Usually the same people show up and if new people do decide to go, they are only there for a few minutes just to check it out. Finding one thing to please everyone is difficult, but there has to be some common interests among us. One suggestion would be to find places that are popular among students and try to re-create the atmosphere for a low price. The words “free” and “discount” appeal to any student. Providing a variety of low-priced events would be one way to increase popularity. For other beneficial suggestions, ask people who are here on the weekends what they would be interested in doing.
Another contribution to the deserted campus is the tiresome downtown scene. Unlike other college towns, downtown Milledgeville does not cater to the typical college student, which is odd since a large part of the population in Milledgeville is college-aged. We contribute to most of the money made in the places downtown, which is hard to do since most of us are on limited incomes. You would think the restaurants, clubs and bars would accommodate the college student by providing specials on the weekends or days during the week. Instead, we get slammed with cover charges and expensive menus. If these places gave students a break some of the time, I’m sure people would go out more often.
For those of you who do go home a lot, try staying here once in a while. I know trying to find something to do is not always easy. The college years are supposed to be the best times of your life, call me crazy, but I don’t think those best times are at home with good old mom and dad. Try staying here some time. Who knows? You may like it and be able to create memories you’ll never forget!
