Dance Minor Spring Concert has something for everyone
The Georgia College & State University Dance Minor Spring Concert, which will be held on April 3 and 4, promises to be entertaining with something for everyone to enjoy, according to choreographers and dance instructors Kora Radella and Amelia Pelton.
The concert will be at 8 p.m. Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday. Both performances are in Russell Auditorium, on the university campus.
Guest artist Laura Feig from the Atlanta Ballet will perform two exquisite solos, and a variety of dance styles will be featured with choreography by Pelton and Radella, as well as works by two dance minor students Kimberly Ragghianti and Devon Sheppard.
The program will begin with “La Damoiselle Quatre,” a pointe piece by Pelton that begins with four stunning solos and includes a lively allegro section for the quartet. The program then moves from the sounds of Bach to excerpts from the soundtrack of “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.”
“Ragghianti’s ‘The Elite’s Black’ is upbeat and the eight dancers really capture the moods and characters of the movie,” said Radella.
Laura Feig will then dance the beautiful solo “Esmeralda,” choreographed by Ben Stevenson. “Amai,” by Radella, will close the first act with a sextet of strong women dancing to African music recorded by a string quartet. “‘Amai’ means ‘mother’ and ‘woman’ from the Shona language in Zimbabwe,” Radella explained.
The second act opens with Radella’s “Satease” and with Erik Satie’s song “Sports and Diversions” played live by pianist Dr. Richard Mercier. This comic work for seven dancers reflects Satie’s sporty and quirky themes in movement. “Somewhere,” a duet by Pelton, includes intricate and passionate partnering to music from “West Side Story,” performed by pianist Mercier and vocalist Jessica Lucas. Sheppard’s “Heritage” is a poignant reflection of songs such as “Danny Boy,” with nine dancers who weave in and out of each other’s pathways of motion. Laura Feig will dance a contemporary ballet solo, “A Dance in the Garden of Mirth,” by Stanton Welch.
The GC&SU Dance Minor Spring Concert will close with “Hey, Big Spender,” choreographed by Pelton in the style of Bob Fosse.
“This musical theatre piece, with accompanist Richard Mercier, will be a crowd-pleaser with dance and song and plenty of pizzazz,” said Radella. “Take the opportunity to support dance in our community and come out to this wonderfully diverse program of dance and music.”
