‘Cats knock off Thomas Unversity; 13-8
The 21st ranked Georgia College & State University baseball team fell 4-3 against the Braves of West Georgia, Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference match-up at John Kurtz Field. The Bobcats managed only six hits in the contest, while stranding 10 runners on base to snap their four-game winning streak.
West Georgia (27-6) dented the board early with a run in the first and second innings as Jared Rolen knocked in Antwon Ammons with a fielder’s choice RBI, before Brandon Lewis scored Chris Meadows from third on an RBI ground out. GC&SU’s (21-13) Nick Trainor quickly put the Bobcats on top in the third, with a three-run home run over the centerfield fence, scoring Jose Leger and John Caruso, who reached base on a pair of walks. In the sixth, Lewis once again plated a run on a two-out, bases loaded RBI single to knot the game 3-all.
Threatening to score in the seventh with one of their three basesloaded innings, the Braves were shut down as relief pitcher Michael Buck pulled the Bobcats out of a jam, retiring the next two batters to end the inning. Going into the ninth inning, Harris Lee led off with a single to right field and later scored the go ahead run on a single by Jonas Bailey to centerfield, as Trainor’s throw to the plate sailed wide right to give West Georgia the eventual win.
Scott Hayman (3-0) earned the win for the Braves after coming in relief for 3.2 innings and only giving up two hits. Michael Kierce picked up his third save of the season. Michael Buck (0-3) took the loss for the Bobcats after allowing three runs on five hits in 3.2 innings. Mike DeVeaux went 2-for-4 to lead GC&SU at the plate.

GC&SU bounced back from a dismal six hit performance on Tuesday in the loss to West Georgia.

Retiring the first two batters in the second, starting pitcher Chris Lawson looked to have another shutout inning until a single, a hit by a pitch, and a walk loaded the bases. Dell Hoard then stepped to the plate and nailed a shot down the left field line to clear the bases and give the Night Hawks the 3-2 advantage. Bobcat Matt Nixon tied the game 3-all in the bottom of the frame with a home run over the centerfield fence for his first of the season. A Greg Serafin sacrifice fly plated Jamie Langham for the go ahead run.
Taking the 5-3 lead in the third on an RBI single by Dan Habel, Thomas answered with three runs on three hits and one Bobcat error in the fourth to reclaim a 6-5 advantage. After a scoreless fifth inning for both squads, GC&SU exploded in the sixth as the Bobcats batted through the lineup, scoring six runs on five hits capitalized by Nick Waldrip’s three RBIs inside-the-park home run. GC&SU would add two more runs in the seventh and hold off a late ninth-inning rally by Thomas for the 13-8 victory.
