Baker’s two homers lift ‘Cats against ASU
Aundrea Baker hit two inside the park home runs, including a walk-off round tripper in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two, to give Georgia College & State University a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader sweep over Augusta State University Wednesday at the Peeler Complex.
Baker, a sophomore from Tyrone, GA, hit one in each game as GC&SU (26-14, 6-6 PBC) won the first game 4-0 and took the nightcap 3-2.
In the first game, GC&SU broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ashley Blanton scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch. Amy Davenport delivered a run-scoring triple later in the inning to put the Lady Bobcats ahead, 2-0. Baker came to bat and slapped a pitch to left center field, chasing Davenport home and circling the bases before the ball could be thrown home.
That’s all the offense that GC&SU pitcher Jenna Kubesch (14-4) would need as she tossed a complete three-hit shutout game with ten strikeouts in the 4-0 win. Shelli Sirmans (4-14) took the loss for Augusta State (11-25, 2-10 PBC) after allowing four runs on eight hits in six complete innings. Tara Hassell went 2-for-4 to lead GC&SU at the plate. Joni Frei went 1-for-2 and became GC&SU’s all-time career hits leader. Leigh Schneider went 2-for-3 to lead the Lady Jaguars.
In game two, Diana Baruffa tripled and scored on a throwing error from the outfield to give GC&SU a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Baker’s RBI single up the middle in the second inning plated Nikki Smith to put the Lady Bobcats up 2-0. The Lady Jaguars would answer with two runs in the fifth inning as Jessica Martin singled in one run, and Michelle Weirauch doubled to left field to score Kristi Davis to tie the game 2-2. Baker led off the bottom of the seventh with another shot to right-center field, and once again used her blazing speed to beat the throw home and win the game 3-2.
Brook Harrison (8-6) picked up the win in relief after shutting out ASU on one hit with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings. Erin Cown took the loss for the Lady Jaguars after allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits in six-plus innings. Baker finished 2-for-4, while Baruffa went 2-for-3 to lead GC&SU at the plate. Stephanie Miller went 4-for-4 with a double, while Davis finished 3-for-4 to lead ASU.
GC&SU travels to Jacksonville on Saturday to take on the Lady Ospreys of North Florida in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
