“ADPi” and “Pikes” named 2004′s Greek Week Champions

The roar of overjoyed Greek Week winners, Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, was all that could be heard when they were announced Sunday evening. The evening concluded the weeklong festivities that promoted unity among the Greeks on campus.
“The biggest contributions that led to Alpha Delta Pi and Pi Kappa Alpha winning this year was scholarship, and the attitude and participation of their entire chapter,” Cisco Diaz, graduate assistant to the director of Greek life, said. “This year’s Greek Week went 100 times better than last year. I’m very proud of all the sororities and fraternities on campus, their attitude and participation is what made it so successful this time around.”
Pi Kappa Alpha took first place in basketball, bowling, tug-of-war, track and sportsmanship and tied with Kappa Alpha Order in the swimming competition. Ward Daugherty, president of Pi Kappa Alpha, said that he is very proud that he and his brothers could come together and be victorious.
“We had a slow start in the beginning, but we worked hard and were able to win,” Daugherty said. “I’d like to thank all the participating fraternities and sororities. And special thanks to all of the coordinators for their hard work to make this an enjoyable and successful Greek Week.”
Kappa Alpha Order took first place in volleyball and football. Kappa Sigma Fraternity took first place in trivia, fun and games and field. Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity took first place in can-serve-a-thon, Greek sing and Greek god competitions.
Alpha Delta Pi received first place in swimming, track, tug-of-war, trivia, Greek sing, Greek goddess and step show competitions. Chandler Rushing, president of Alpha Delta Pi, credits the hard work and dedication of every member of her chapter for the repeat victory.
“We prepared for a long time before Greek week even started because we wanted to win so badly, and our hard work paid off,” Chandler said.
In other events, Delta Zeta Sorority received first place in volleyball and the sportsmanship award, and Phi Mu Sorority received first place in football, basketball, bowling, fun and games, can-serve-a-thon and field competitions.
During last year’s Greek Week, there was some controversy over the scoring of various events. This year’s Greek Week committee changed fun and games, can-serve-a-thon, Greek god/goddess, and Greek sing to count as participation points only to try to prevent any further problems.
“By making these events worth only participation points, it eliminates most of the competition and people can relax and have fun with the events without having to worry about first or second place,” Fraternity Representative of the Student Greek Week Executive Council and member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, John Stockstill, said.
Two executives organized all of the events, Katie Paul as the representative for the sororities and John Stockstill for the fraternities, along with representatives from all of the organizations involved, that met from the beginning of the semester in order to ensure that the week went smoothly. Hopes are high that next year’s Greek Week will go just as well, if not better.
