Bobcats hit and miss over break

GC&SU Baseball Splits Conference Doubleheader

Saturday, March 13, 2004
The Georgia College & State University baseball team split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon against University of South Carolina at Spartanburg at John Kurtz Field. The Bobcats dropped the opener in a close 11-10 battle, but came back with a 6-0 shutout to salvage the day.
In the first game, USC Spartanburg (14-8, 6-5 PBC) dented the board early in the first inning on a pair of RBI singles by Erica Davis and Bret Hansen, but GC&SU (15-8, 3-5 PBC) quickly answered as Jamie Langham led off with a shot over the left field fence to pull within one, 2-1.
In the second game, Nick Trainor started things off with a home run. Langham later singled in the go ahead run to take the 3-2 lead. The Rifles would push across two runs in the third before Jose Leger led off the bottom of the inning with his own shot over centerfield to knot the game four-all.
Coming in for relief, Michael Buck got the Bobcats out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth as GC&SU plated three runs on four hits and a Rifles error to go up 7-5. USC Spartanburg eventually tied the game, however, scoring a run in the fifth and seventh innings before exploding in the eighth with three runs for the 10-7 advantage.
The Bobcats fought back within one as Leger hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, while Greg Serafin nailed a two-run bomb in the ninth with two outs, but it wasn’t enough as the Rifles got their third out on a fly ball to centerfield to seal the win.
Stan Smith (3-0) picked up the win after allowing two runs on two hits in one and two thirds innings of work. Michael Buck (0-2) took the loss for the Bobcats after pitching three and one third innings, while giving up three runs, two earned, on one hit. Davis went 4-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored to pace the Rifles at the plate.
In the nightcap, Langham led off the game once more with a home run for his fourth of the season, while Leger and John Caruso plated a run apiece on a pair of sacrifice flies in the third to go up 3-0.
In the fourth, Hans Stancil lined a shot down the left field line to score runners Greg Serafin and Dan Habel before speeding around the bases and scoring himself, after the ball was misplayed by the left fielder to plate the final three runs.
Durden (3-0) earned the win after pitching a complete game, scattering five hits with six strikeouts. Starter Jeff Jerome (2-3) took the loss for the Rifles after allowing six earned runs on five hits in three and two thirds innings of work. Langham went 4-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored for the day to lead the Bobcats at the plate.

GC&SU Baseball Completes USC Spartanburg Series with Win

Sunday, March 14, 2004
GC&SU’s baseball team turned their attention to Sunday’s game as they pounded out 14 hits to defeat USC Spartanburg 13-5 Sunday afternoon at John Kurtz Field.
With neither squad scoring a run in the first, GC&SU (16-8, 4-5 PBC) exploded in the second as Matt Nixon hit an RBI single before the Bobcats loaded the bases for Jamie Langham, who nailed a two-out shot over the left center fence for his third homer in two days to take the 5-0 lead.
GC&SU plated five more runs in the third and two in the fourth to build a 12-0 advantage, until USC Spartanburg capitalized on a Bobcat error and two walks to plate two runs in the fifth, cutting the deficit 12-2.
Eric Davis singled up the middle and later scored on a sacrifice fly made by Adam Whiteside in the sixth, but it ended up being too little too late as GC&SU scored a run in the sixth and held the Rifles to only two runs in the ninth, to coast to the 13-5 victory.
Billy Leigh (3-2) picked up the win after allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits in seven complete innings of work. Brandon Williams (4-2) took the loss for the Rifles after pitching two and two thirds innings, while giving up 10 runs on eight hits.
Langham went 3-5 with 5 RBIs and a run scored, while John Caruso went 3-3 with four runs scored to lead the Bobcats at the plate.
The Bobcats took two out of the three games in the Peach Belt Conference series after falling 11-10 on Saturday in the opener, but salvaging a 6-0 win in the nightcap.
