Women win; Men lose first match
The Georgia College & State University women’s tennis team remained undefeated after knocking off Georgia Southwestern State University 8-1, Sunday at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility.
The GC&SU men suffered their first loss of the year with a 5-4 defeat to the Hurricanes.
In the women’s match, GC&SU (4-0) picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take an early 2-1 lead.
Rachael Porsz and Anna Shchupak defeated Kimberly Guthas and Rachel Fabila 8-0 at No. 2, while Anna Davidsson and Jessica McKnight also blanked Leslie Dallas and Carrie Sacco 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.
Georgia Southwestern picked up a win at No. 1 doubles as Ann Grobbelaar and Julia Noguiera defeated Luiza Biktyakova and Chenelle Kruger, 8-6.
In singles play, Biktyakova knocked off Grobbelaar 6-3; 6-2 at No. 1, while Shchupak defeated Noguiera 6-3; 6-1 at No. 2. Davidsson defeated Guthas 6-2; 6-0 at No. 3, while Kruger picked up a 6-0; 6-0 win over Fabila at No. 4 singles.
Porsz cruised to a 6-0; 6-0 win over Dallas at No. 5, while Kremena Vassileva blanked Sacco 6-0; 6-0 at No.6.
In the men’s match, GC&SU’s James Gorin and Rodrigo Yamauti rallied for an 8-6 win at No.1 doubles over Romain Sayze and Todd Hiscox.
The Bobcats picked up another point by default at No. 3 doubles, but the Hurricanes salvaged an 8-6 win at No. 2 as Gus Rezende and Nathan Rooney edged GC&SU’s Brandon Lee and Mikael Pettersson.
However, Georgia Southwestern was too much to handle in singles play, winning in the top four slots to earn the victory.
Georgia Southwestern’s Sayze defeated Gorin 6-0; 7-5 at No.1, while Hiscox rallied for a thrilling 4-6; 6-0; 7-6 win over Yamauti at No. 2 singles. Rooney outlasted Pettersson in three sets 6-3; 0-6; 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and Rezende clinched the match for the Hurricanes with a 6-3; 6-3 win over Lee at No. 4.
GC&SU’s Per Schartum-Hansen won 6-1; 6-0 at No. 5 singles over Phillips.
The two tennis teams return to action Saturday at noon.
