‘Cats fall to 7-5, after loss to UNF

UNF
Georgia College & State University split a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader with the University of North Florida Saturday at Harmon Stadium.
Eighth ranked UNF won the first game 15-3, but sixth-ranked GC&SU bounced back with a 9-0 win in game two.
Scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, UNF opened the flood gates on the Bobcats, scoring five runs, three of them coming when Jeff Millsaps belted a home run to left field.
The Ospreys added five more in the sixth and seventh before Travis Stanton gave up a two-run home run in the top of the eighth. Millsaps went 3-for-5 with a home run, five RBIs and two runs scored to lead UNF.
UNF’s Travis Stanton improved 3-0 on the season, going seven and two-thirds innings allowing three runs on four hits while striking out 10.
GC&SU’s Travis Spell fell to 0-2 in the short 2004 year, going 4.2 innings allowing five runs, only one earned run on four hits.
In game two, the Bobcats jumped out to an 8-0 lead with seven hits, three of them being doubles in the first three innings.
During that time UNF went through three pitchers, allowing eight earned runs while walking four and hitting one.
UNF’s Ryan Amason fell to 1-2 on the season allowing four runs on three hits in only one inning of work. GC&SU’s Brandon Durden picked up his first win of the season throwing a complete shutout game, allowing only four hits.
Jose Leger went 4-4 with three RBIs and one run scored to lead GC&SU at the plate.
In Sunday’s game, UNF topped off a wild sixth inning with seven runs that helped propel it to a 10-8 win against GC&SU at Harmon Stadium.
GC&SU broke open a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth, before UNF sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning and scored seven runs on six hits, two hit batsmen and a wild pitch.
UNF catcher Judd Loveland provided the game-winning hit, scoring a pair of runs with an RBI single up the middle in the sixth.
Marion Knowles and Jon Hodach both came around to score on the play, putting the Ospreys ahead 9-7.
Phil Gaby led the sixth for the Ospreys with a base hit, which was followed by a double to left by Ryan Knight. Joey Russell plated Gaby with a base hit to short right, while Knight scored shortly after that on a wild pitch.
Joey Sayre was brought in to preserve the lead for the Bobcats, but couldn’t accomplish the feat, as he hit the first batter he faced, Sadry Caf. Sayre hit two batters in the inning and gave up three hits.
Sayre gave up a one-out walk to Russell in the seventh inning, and then allowed Matt Oxendine a free pass before giving way to Billy Leigh. Russell eventually came in to score on a wild pitch to give the Ospreys a 10-7 advantage.
GC&SU tried to fight its way back into the game in the top of the ninth, scoring a run to make it a 10-8 ballgame after John Caruso led the inning off with a double and scored on a Kyle Schisler infield single.
The Bobcats then loaded the bases, but left all three runners standing by when Ryan Amason struck out Jamie Langham with a 3-2 breaking ball that caught Langham looking.
Amason was credited with the save after giving up three hits and one earned run in two innings of relief. Amason walked one and struck out four. Billy Layman (1-0) took the win after coming to relieve Josh Papelbon in the sixth inning. Sayre (1-1) was tagged with the loss for GC&SU.
