Student artwork displayed

Art Fix, a student-run exhibit displaying student art work, officially opens in Mayfair Hall on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in room 106.
Art Fix was envisioned and is organized by senior English major Alison Martin. This space is the first student-affiliated art gallery at Georgia College & State University.
“We’re very proud of her that she put all this together. It’s exciting when students take the initiative to do extraordinary projects like Art Fix,” Patrick Holbrook, assistant professor of art, said.
“I started Art Fix because I saw how starved students were for a place they could come, display their art and have fellowship with other artists,” Martin said.
Martin’s incentive for beginning this exhibit was to provide a venue for artists to share their work with their peers. She named the gallery Art Fix in order to pique the GC&SU community’s interest.
“Whenever I told somebody the name of the gallery, they wanted to know more, so I figured it is a catchy name and suits the venue well,” Martin said.
Any kind of artwork can be displayed at Art Fix. According to Patrick Holbrook, Art Fix presents anything from visual art, to live music, to poetry readings.
“Art Fix is like an open-mic night, but it’s better than the ones they have at certain bars in Milledgeville,” Frank Hoover, English/creative writing major, said.
“There are no limits,” Martin said. “Art Fix is a place for visual performance, music and the written word to be put out there for the rest of the community.”
“Sometimes we’ll have a visiting artist come through who wants to use the space,” Martin said. “For instance, last semester we had the pleasure of having John Hitchcock visit and share his work.”
The upcoming show on Thursday, Feb. 19 will present work from the ceramics and painting classes. The exhibits generally last up to a month.
Although Art Fix features mostly undergraduate artists, it is free and open to the entire community of Milledgeville.
Hoover encourages fellow students to attend Art Fix.
“I think the turnout will be crescent fresh, as it was last semester,” Hoover said.
“I love what I do, and creating this gallery has been one of the most unforgettable experiences thus far in my college career,” Martin said. “Support the arts because you never know when the arts can support you.”
