Baseball

The fourth ranked Georgia College & State University baseball team was upset 6-3 by Georgia Southwestern State University at John Kurtz Field on Tuesday. The Hurricanes pounded out 16 hits in the victory.
Georgia Southwestern (5-5) dented the scoreboard with a run in the second inning thanks to John Kokotajlo’s RBI single up the middle. GC&SU (4-3) answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take its only lead at 2-1, but the Hurricanes battled back with two more runs in the third inning and would never trail again. GC&SU opened the game with two runs, thanks in part to a Jamie Langham single, along with three walks, an error and wild pitch by the Golden Rams to quickly go up 2-0 in the first inning.
The wheels would come off in the fourth for starter Michael Buck, however, Cedric Gibson stroked an RBI double down the left field line then later scored on a wild pitch to put the Golden Rams on the board.
With the bases loaded in the eighth, Jose Leger singled to left field to score the tying and go ahead runs before another run would score off an ASU throwing error to take the 10-8 lead.
A double to left by Mike Deveaux and another Golden Ram error plated the final three runs to give GC&SU the eventual 13-8 victory.

Softball

The Georgia College & State University softball team opened the 2004 season in exciting fashion with a doubleheader sweep of Georgia Southwestern State University on Tuesday at the Peeler Complex.
GC&SU (2-0) won the first game 12-3 in a five inning game called due to the run-rule, but the Lady Bobcats had to rally from an early 7-1 deficit to take the second game 9-8 after scoring four runs in their final at bat.
In the first game, freshman pitcher Jenna Kubesch picked up her first collegiate victory and stroked her first home run, a three run shot in the bottom of the fifth, to end the game 12-3 due to the run rule. Heather Jones delivered a two-run single in the first inning to put the Lady Bobcats ahead 2-0. The Lady Bobcats plated three more runs in the third, but Georgia Southwestern (0-2) scratched three runs across in the top of the fourth to cut the lead down 5-3. GC&SU answered with seven runs, capped by Kubesch’s walk-off home run in the fifth to end the game.
Jones went 3-3 with three RBIs, while Diana Baruffa went 1-2 with a triple and three RBIs. Aundrea Baker also had a good game at the plate after going 2-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. DeeJay West (0-1) took the loss for Georgia Southwestern.
In game two, Georgia Southwestern jumped on freshman pitcher Tara Hassell for six runs in the first 1.1 innings and led 7-1 heading into the bottom of the third inning. Junior Brook Harrison quieted the Lady ‘Canes’ bats, and the Lady Bobcats chipped away to cut the deficit down to 7-5 after five innings. Georgia Southwestern plated an insurance run in the sixth to go up 8-5, but the Lady Bobcats exploded for four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Jones singled and eventually scored the first run of the inning thanks to an error following a ground ball by Kubesch. Ashley Blanton then drilled a line-drive two-run shot over the left field wall to knot the game at 8-all. Amber Usry singled, and Anna Cheely was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Following a wild pitch, Joni Frei walked to load the bases for Baker. Baker stroked a single to deep centerfield, scoring pinch-runner Aubrey Koscelski for the game winning run.
