Goliard Ensemble hits the stage

“Our World of Music Event with Goliard Music Festival” comes to Max Noah Recital Hall Monday, Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
The recital will feature the Goliard Ensemble, a group of classically trained musicians working out of New York City. The ensemble combines piano, violin, cello, basoon and voice in their performances. The group tours each year with a varied program of what is generally called classical music.
“Their music also has a jazz influence in their programming and sometimes approaches from non-western music, as well,” said Dr. Richard Greene, chair and professor in the music & theatre department.
The program will also include a composition by Alabama composer, Charles Mason, entitled “A Completed Portrait of Picasso.” This composition uses the poetry of Gertrude Stein. A new work by Florida composer, Michael Coleman, entitled “Fairhope,” will be performed as well. In addition to these there will be compositions by 18th and 19th century European composers and a piece by the American composer, Leonard Bernstein, who wrote the musical “West Side Story.”
“Some of the music will be very soulful and beautiful, and some pieces will be very dynamic and aggressive,” said Greene.
The Goliard Ensemble has been coming to Georgia College & State University to perform for nearly 15 years. This year workshops will be held for various instruments and the GC&SU string orchestra in the days following the recital. There will also be a composers’ forum on Friday, Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m. with a recital of new music following at 7:30 p.m. in the Max Noah Recital Hall. This recital will feature music by GC&SU faculty and recent GC&SU graduate, Saeko Hasegawa. Also, there will be compositions by student composers and faculty from LaGrange College.
Greene encourages GC&SU faculty, staff and students to attend the recital.
“While some folks think that classical music is dead or stuffy, classical recitals are really fascinating experiences,” said Greene.
The recital is sponsored by the Music and Theatre Department. Admission for the recital is $6 for the general public, $3 for senior citizens, non-GC&SU students, GC&SU faculty and staff and $1 for GC&SU students with a valid I.D.
