McGinnis invited to S.C
Michael McGinnis, associate professor of chemistry, has been invited to be a reader at the College Board’s 2004 AP Chemistry Reading.
He was nominated and recommended by a friend, but then applied for the position like any other job.
McGinnis explained what the AP Chemistry Reading is.
“The AP reading is the grading of the AP chemistry exam. Each year, high school seniors take AP classes and more than 65,000 choose to take the College Board’s chemistry AP exam to earn college credit. Students complete a 90-minute multiple choice section and a 90-minute free response section. The free response section (quantitative problem-solving skills, knowledge of chemical reactions, and ability to reason and explain ideas) must be graded by humans. That’s where I come in. I am an ETS (Educational Testing Service) consultant for AP and can be invited to participate in the AP reading (as I have the past 2 years). There are more than 300 ETS chemistry consultants and only 100+ will participate in the 2004 AP reading. ETS chemistry consultants are AP chemistry teachers and college faculty that teach general chemistry,” McGinnis said.
This reading will be held June 2-10, at Clemson University in South Carolina. Congratulations, Dr. McGinnis.
