Women lose second game
The Georgia College & State University basketball teams split in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against host University of North Florida Wednesday night at the UNF arena.
The 15th ranked Lady Bobcats suffered their second loss of the season, falling 64-51 to the 6th ranked Lady Ospreys, while the GC&SU men broke a four-game slide with a 75-70 victory over the Ospreys in the nightcap.
In the women’s game, the Lady Bobcats (14-2, 3-2 PBC) looked as though they left their “shooters” at home, giving the Lady Ospreys (15-1, 4-1 PBC) an early 8-2 advantage to start the game.
GC&SU struggled to hit its first field goal until at the 10:45 mark on a Renea Phelps jumper to tie the game 10-all. The Lady Bobcats kept up with the Lady Ospreys, while hitting 10 of 12 free throws. After allowing UNF to go on a 7-1 run with little over nine minutes left in the half, GC&SU scored eleven straight points to regain the lead at 22-20.
Unfortunately, that lead quickly dwindled by another 9-0 run by the Lady Ospreys for the remaining 5 minutes of the frame. The two teams entered halftime with a 28-25 advantage for the Lady Ospreys.
GC&SU came out of the gate running in the second half, building a 36-28 lead on an 11-0 run to hold the Lady Ospreys scoreless for over a seven-minute stretch. To the dismay of the Lady Bobcats, UNF would answer once again, only this time with an 18-2 run to take a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
The Lady Ospreys continued to pull away in the final minutes of the game, holding GC&SU at arm’s length to clinch their second straight win.
Latisha Perry led UNF with 17 points, while Skye Barber posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to go with 5 steals. Cecilia Woolfolk added 10 points off the bench.
Antionette Long led GC&SU with 14 points as the only Lady Bobcat in double figures.
The Lady Bobcats shot a dismal 25.7 percent (18-70) for the game, including eight percent (1-12) from beyond the arc.
In the men’s game, GC&SU (4-12, 1-4 PBC) slowly recovered from an early five-point deficit, 7-2, at the 15:24 mark to take the lead, 16-14, on a Willie Francis dunk and follow-up free throw.
The lead would exchange hands a number of times with seven minutes remaining, until Tylan Gatling’s back-to-back “treys” in the final minute would give the Bobcats the momentum going into the locker room with the 35-32 lead.
GC&SU shot a blistering 70 percent (14-20) from the floor in the first half, while the Ospreys shot 41.4 percent (12-29).
The lead see-sawed back and forth early in the second half, until the Bobcats reached one of their biggest leads, 61-53, at the 6:11 mark. The Ospreys (9-7, 1-4 PBC) cut the deficit to six, 65-59, with three minutes remaining, until reaching as close as 67-65 in the final minute of the game.
Cooper Sellers and Duke Gibbs, however, hit four big free throws with only seconds left in the game to seal the Bobcats first conference win of the year.
Francis led GC&SU with a career high of 24 points (9-11) and seven rebounds in only his third start of the season, while Gatling added 13 points.
Anthony Earl led UNF with 19 points, while teammate Pershin Williams contributed 18 points.
GC&SU finished the night shooting a season-high of 65.8 percent (25-38), including 71 percent (22-31) from the charity stripe.
The Ospreys shot 44.1 percent (26-59) from the field for the game, while only hitting 57.1% (12-21) from the charity stripe. GC&SU out-rebounded UNF 30-26.
GC&SU returns home Saturday to take on USC Aiken in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader. The women’s game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
