To the Editor
Dear Editor,
To the members of SGA who fought so adamantly to impeach President Iheanyi Maduka, you know who you are, I write this message not in hate but with compassion and love. I am one of the many students who share the same common vision, the same goals and I want you to know that despite your efforts to silence and block out the student voice, we are still here and we are not going anywhere. You can attempt to knock us down with your petty allegations and lies, but we will get back up.
The impeachment trial of President Maduka helped the student body see the TRUE faces of our Student Government Association. I know I am not alone when I state that SGA has lost a lot of respect from the student body. There were many issues brought at hand, some important, most were ridiculous. Over 30 hours of investigation took place by SGA, and most of the accusations were not backed by sufficient evidence. It seemed like the Articles of Impeachment only stated half the story … conveniently. No one wanted to state any of the good President Iheanyi did for this organization, only the bad. No one wanted to acknowledge that there were other officers who didn’t fulfill their duties, only Iheanyi. It was a disgrace how this trial was handled. Iheanyi was met with hatred and disrespect from FELLOW senators. Instead of being adults and confronting Maduka one-on-one, SGA jumped straight to impeachment. How can SGA function as one unit with such discontent? The SGA is supposed to be a group of leaders on the campus of Georgia College & State University, and they have one sole purpose: To serve as a united voice for the students. How can they thoroughly do that when they can’t even communicate within their unit? It was also disturbing to see that when students took the floor to speak, half of the members of SGA sat with their backs turned … or even held other conversations during a speech! It reflects very badly on an organization when they can’t even live up to what their initial purpose is. It is also unfortunate for the few SGA members who are genuine people, and who are actually concerned with the issues. A few bad apples can ruin it for the whole bunch. A statement was made by one of the senators (you know who you are) that students aren’t involved with SGA or campus activities. I just want to state that the student turn out to this impeachment trial was excellent and I promise you that if more issues like this occur in the future we will show up in the same numbers … if not greater!
So, a bit of advice to those who are trying to impede the advancement of President Maduka: you can either be on his side or not, that is your choice. Either way, he is going to do what is right for the student body, with or without your support. And he will be backed by the students of GC&SU, for we are the voices of this campus, also! Do not waste time with frivolous issues (like whether or not he called you by the right title); put your efforts into campus issues like the housing situation, more campus activities or the food at the cafeteria. Use your intellectual talents and apply them to something that really matters, not wasteful efforts to knock down one of your fellow members. I will pray that a resolution is at hand, because without one this organization will be lost.
Sincerely,
Shaleen Clark,
GC&SU student
