Move over Avril. Fefe Dobson has made her entrance onto the music scene, and it looks like she is here to stay.
Dobson, an eighteen-year-old from Scarborough, Ontario, released her self-titled CD Dec. 9. Her debut single, “Take Me Away,” was an immediate hit on pop radio stations and MTV. Her current single, “Everything,” is featured in the upcoming MTV film, “The Perfect Score.”
Dobson was signed at Island Def Jam Records in 2003. She wrote and co-wrote all thirteen songs on the album, including a hidden track. She cites Nirvana and Michael Jackson as some of her greatest influences.
This is one of those CDs that you can turn on and play all the way through without skipping any songs. From the punk rock style of “Stupid Little Love Song,” “Bye Bye Boyfriend” and “Kiss Me Fool” to the power-chord filled “Take Me Away,” “Everything” and “Give It Up” to the soulful “Revolution Song” and “Julia,” Fefe shows off her range of style. “We Went for a Ride” will have you mellowing out in the car, while “Rock It till You Drop It” will have you dancing around your apartment. It is a fun-filled CD that is sure to please anyone interested in punk, rock or pop music.
I have several favorite songs on the album. I particularly enjoy “Everything.” The song begins as a ballad, but by the time you hit the chorus, the beat picks up and has a stronger rock feel to it. I also really like “Kiss Me Fool.” This song is more energetic. Both songs are basically love songs expressing the importance of telling someone if you have feelings for them; otherwise, the person is just going to move on, and then you will always be left wondering what you might have missed.
Another one of my favorites is “We Went for a Ride.” This song has simple lyrics, but is very catchy and features an array of instrumental solos, including the guitar, piano and drums. It is the perfect song for a road trip.
The bitter-toned rock song, “Unforgiven,” is one of Dobson’s darker songs on the album. The song is an ode to her father, who was not a part of Dobson’s life growing up.
Dobson has been featured on MTV’s “Total Request Live” as a breakout star and is currently touring with Justin Timberlake in the UK.
If you are into the sounds of Avril Lavigne or Michelle Branch, you will definitely enjoy Fefe Dobson’s CD. She is truly the next big star in the pop-rock world.
