Movin’ on up … students move into new dorms
With the completion of Phase II of the residence hall construction project, around 400 Georgia College & State University students will be able to move into Adams and Wells Halls beginning 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16.
“I do believe that we’re going to be ready for the students on Friday,” said Jimmy McKee, superintendent of Ambling Construction Company. “There have been some adverse weather conditions that have put us a little behind schedule, but we are ready for the students to move in.”
A combination of moving truck crews, residence hall staff and volunteers helped move the students’ belongings into Adams and Wells halls on Wednesday.
The students were asked to box their possessions for the moving crews, who will take them to the new residence halls. According to Drew Jahr, the resident director of Terrell Hall, the move has gone well so far.
“It has really been a lot of trial and error, but things are going well, much smoother than the move last year with Parkhurst and Foundation Halls. Today we are just moving in the boxed items from the students, but the students themselves will be moving in Friday,” said Jahr. Most of the students moving to the new residence halls are freshmen and current residents of Napier Hall. According to Jahr, the majority will come from Napier; however, students from Parkhurst and Foundation Halls will be moving in as well.
Like Parkhurst and Foundation Halls, Wells and Adams are suite-style dorms containing over 100 rooms.
Napier Hall’s demolition is the next phase of the residence hall construction.
In order to leave room for the movers’ trucks, two lanes in the Centennial parking lot have been closed behind Napier. In addition, many of the surrounding streets, including Greene Street, will be controlled Friday and Saturday to assist with the moving of students into the new buildings.
