Lady ‘Cats survive in Kennesaw; Bobcats lose again
Junior forward Latia Love collected a team-high 23 points to go with seven rebounds as the No. 17 Georgia College & State University Lady Bobcats squeaked by the Lady Owls of Kennesaw State, 69-68, Wednesday evening at the Spec Landrum Centre.
GC&SU, now 13-1 overall and 2-1 in the Peach Belt, earned its second straight victory, and without the services of the team’s leading scorer Antionette Long who was out with the flu. The GC&SU men struggled to bounce back from a rough start against Kennesaw State, however, as the Bobcats dropped their third straight game 89-72 in the nightcap of the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.
In the women’s game, the Lady Bobcats opened with an early 7-0 run for the 7-2 lead until the Lady Owls (10-4, 2-1 PBC) answered with a 6-0 run of their own for the 8-7 advantage. Both squads would take turns with the lead throughout most of the half as neither team led by more than five until the 4:17 mark. GC&SU then sparked a late 11-0 run starting with an Adrienne Jackson jumper and topped with a long range bomb by Breane Haggard with 2:28 left to play before Kennesaw State’s Larvisha West hit a last second three-pointer to cut the Lady Bobcat lead 35-28 at the half.
The second half looked to be more of the same as the Lady Owls pulled within one at the 14 minute mark until Love sparked an 8-0 run with back-to-back treys followed by an Alicia Ransom three-ball to take the 57-48 lead. The final minutes, however, proved to be the real nail-biter as Denisha Ferguson completed a three point play with a minute remaining to pull Kennesaw State within one, 69-68. After a missed shot and held ball by GC&SU, the possession returned to the Lady Owls for one last chance to steal the game. West missed a 4-foot put back, however, as time expired and the Lady Bobcats celebrated their win.
Along with Love, senior forward Rachael Jackson added ten points as the only other Lady Bobcat in double figures. Ferguson led Kennesaw State with 33 points and nine rebounds, while West contributed 12 points. In the men’s game, things quickly turned in Kennesaw State’s favor as the Owls (13-4, 3-0 PBC) went on a 16-0 run and held the Bobcats (3-11, 0-3 PBC) scoreless for over five minutes to build a 21-7 lead. A jumper by John Thomas finally broke the scoring drought, but GC&SU needed help in other areas as well as the Bobcats struggled to handle the ball and committed 15 turnovers in the half to enter the locker room down 48-24.
Terence Hill led Kennesaw State with 24 points, including 19 in the first half. John Thomas and Tylan Gatling led GC&SU with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
