Britney marries and divorces in two days
Pop sensation Britney Spears has shocked the nation yet again.
According to the Associated Press, the 22-year-old entertainer married a childhood friend, Jason Allen Alexander, on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 5:30 a.m. Spears was vacationing with a small group of friends in Las Vegas, Nev. to celebrate the New Year. Alexander told the AP that he and Britney decided to get married early Saturday morning.
In an interview at his home in Kentwood, La. Monday morning, Alexander told “Access Hollywood,” “We were just looking at each other and said, ‘Let’s do something wild, crazy. Let’s go get married, just for the hell of it.’”
The couple took a limousine to the Little White Wedding Chapel where they were told that they could not get married without a marriage license. Spears and Alexander were taken to get a license and then returned to the chapel, where they were married.
Opting for less traditional attire, Spears marched down the aisle in a baseball cap and torn jeans. She was escorted by the Palms Casino Hotel limo driver.
Witnesses denied that Spears was drunk the night of the wedding.
“She was just having a good time,” George Maloof, Jr., owner and operator of the Palms Casino Hotel, told the AP.
Quickly after the wedding, the couple decided to have the marriage annulled. According to the AP, Spears claimed she “lacked understanding of her actions.”
The marriage was annulled Monday, Jan. 5. According to the AP, the request for the annulment was signed by Spears, but not Alexander.
The document said of the union: “Upon learning of each other’s desires, they are so incompatible that there was a want of understanding of each other’s actions in entering into this marriage.”
The document also stated, “the plaintiff and defendant did not know each other’s likes and dislikes.”
Clark County Family Court Judge Lisa M. Brown signed the order at 12:24 p.m.
“There is no marriage now,” David Chesnoff, Spears’ attorney, told the AP. “Jason agreed to this completely. They’ve made a wise decision. I know they care about each other. They are friends.”
Spears’ record label, Jive Records, released a statement to “Entertainment Tonight” saying that Spears and Alexander “took a joke too far.”
Students at Georgia College & State University had their own opinions on the shocking weekend marriage.
“My first reaction was that she of course was a bit inebriated,” said Beth Bowers, junior psychology major.
“I think the only reason she did it was for publicity,” said Megan Cearns, sophomore undecided major.
