The race to see who will be the next President here at Georgia College & State University is coming to a close. With only two people left in the running for the most visible position on our campus, we at the Colonnade have come up with a list of the things we consider important in our future leader. If this issue happens to land on the desk of someone who is involved in deciding who our new President will be, take notice … here are the characteristics of the leader we feel would be the best fit for our campus.
We need to make sure that our new president is in touch with the students. He or she must feel comfortable sitting down with the students and discovering the main concerns of the student body. Rosemary Depaolo was known for sitting down next to students in the dining hall and asking them about their experiences here at GC&SU. He or she must have a sense of humor and an outgoing personality. Being the President of a University may be a stressful job, but a sense of humor will make it easier for people to identify with the President.
Our new President should also be visible on campus. He or she should attend sporting events and campus activities in order to show support for this university. The person who receives the position must be open-minded and willing to accept each person’s opinion. They also need to communicate their ideas in a clear manner. It would be impossible to lead a campus if no one understood the message you’re trying to get through.
The next leader of this university should be a creative individual who will be able to come up with new ways to tackle the issues that face our campus. The person chosen must be a humanitarian who wants to leave a positive imprint not only on the campus of GC&SU, but on the community as a whole.
Our new president should be able to follow through with the plans they make for our university. Those who are responsible for selecting our President should look into the candidate’s past and see if they always stick with their commitments. We need an individual who will make clear plans for our school, and develop ways to ensure the completion of the projects.
Our new leader must have a vision for our school. It is not enough to lead a student body if you have no dreams of what our school could someday be. Like Henry Kissinger once said, “If you do not know where you are going, every road will get you nowhere.”
To all of those who are involved in the selection process: choose wisely. The future of our university lies in your hands.
