Progressive dinner gets GC&SU into the holiday spirit

Students, faculty and staff will have a chance to gather for the Holidays on Nov. 20 at the annual Holiday Progressive Dinner.
The Progressive Dinner is a popular event held at Georgia College & State University every year around Thanksgiving, when students are invited to the homes of faculty and staff for Thanksgiving dinner.
Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of University Housing Paul Jahr said The Progressive Dinner was actually started about 13 years ago by then-Vice President of Student Affairs Kurt Hofmann.
“It’s an idea … that he brought with him from his previous institution,” he said. “The purpose was to provide an opportunity for students and faculty to interact in an informal atmosphere, to give the students an opportunity to visit with a faculty member at his or her home and to kind of personalize, at that time, the Georgia College experience.”
The evening begins in the Hoke Dining room with appetizers, music and festivities and conversation. Next, participants travel to the home of a faculty or staff host for a delicious meal. The evening concludes with a grand finale of dessert and music at the Cathy Alumni House.
“It’s a really nice kickoff to the holiday season,” Vice President of Student Affairs Bruce Harshbarger said. “Over the years, it’s been a real nice time to invite faculty, staff and students together.”
Harshbarger said that over the years, many of the same students continue to go back to the same homes.
“It’s like having family in after a while,” he said.
Students who are interested in participating should complete the Student Registration Form available in 214 Lanier Hall, where they can also pick up a schedule of events for the evening.
All registration forms should be returned to Jennifer Brooker in person or via campus mail at CBX 027. The deadline to register for the 2003 Progressive Dinner is Friday, Nov. 14 by lunch.
The G.I.V.E. Center will also hold a canned-food drive in conjunction with the event at the beginning of the evening. A drop box will be placed outside of Hoke Dining Room and all proceeds will be donated to a local food pantry.
For more information, call 445-5169.
“It’s a really nice way to get to know people who you may never have a class with,” Harshbarger said.
