On Deck…

Get the hook! That’s what I say sometimes when I’m watching my favorite team stink it up on television. And if you ever catch me at a live sporting event, you might hear a lot more “adult oriented” words come out of my mouth, especially if the tickets were expensive and the team is playing like I got in for free.
Now, you might be reading this and asking yourself, “how could someone get so carried away with watching sports?” For me, watching sports is more than mere entertainment … it’s a release.
A release is something that takes you away from the moment and gets your mind off of the grind of the daily hustle. Everyone needs a release and once you find one, the better off you’ll feel. Regardless of if my favorite team is getting blown out or winning the championship, I can always step away from the game feeling refreshed and re-energized.
Some people find their release in a book. Some people go shopping. Some people go to the local bar and get “tanked,” and some people do far worse than that. My point is, if reality is starting to wear you down, then do something different to gather your thoughts, and give reality another try when you’re calm and collected.
In sticking with my theme for the week, there are a couple of college football teams that need to “release” something this weekend, beginning with the No. 1 ranked Oklahoma University Sooners.
The top team in the land will be hosting their annual Bedlam Game against the No. 15 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys. The Sooners will be hoping to “release” some respect from the cocky Cowboys.
You see, the Sooners have been gaining respect from everybody in the college ranks except Oklahoma State, which has beaten the Sooners two years in a row. For Oklahoma, things are pretty simple … beat their in-state nemesis and get a shot at playing in the national championship, or lose, and kiss another fine year goodbye. The two teams have already started trash-talking, and the contact hitting will begin Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on the ABC network.
For the hometown crew, the No. 4 ranked Georgia Bulldogs will be looking to “release” years of revenge upon the No. 21 ranked Florida Gators. Florida has beaten the Bulldogs in 12 of the last 13 meetings between these two, but Steve Spurrier won’t save the Gators now. Besides, defense wins championships, and the Bulldogs boast the third best defense in the nation. The action will start Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on the CBS network.
No. 11 Virginia Tech will host the dominating, dangerous and destructive Miami Hurricanes Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN. The Hoakies will be looking to “release” a little disappointment on the No. 2 ranked Hurrincanes.
Last week, Va. Tech was undefeated, ranked third in the nation, and looking forward to their matchup with Miami, with the winner almost guaranteed a spot in the national championship game. This week, Va. Tech has a loss on their record and disappointment in their hearts. I know they would love nothing more than to end the Hurricanes’ hopes of a third-straight championship appearance.
Other great college games to keep an eye out for on Saturday is the in-state clash between No. 12 Michigan and No. 10 Michigan State, No. 9 ranked Nebraska traveling to take on the No.16 Texas Longhorns, and Notre Dame playing host to No. 5 ranked Florida State is my “Beatdown of the Week.”
Sorry for all of my pro-football fans, but this weekend definitely belongs to the college players. I’ll see you in two weeks with some serious NFL and NBA previews, but in the meantime, start searching for your own release … you’ll be glad you did. Happy watching!
