It’s your right to know
Every student that goes to Georgia College & State University knows that Thursday nights are college nights at all the bars in downtown Milledgeville. Unfortunately, so do the police. They are out in force every Thursday night, making sure that everyone is safe. They patrol the streets and watch our actions very closely.
The fact that the Milledgeville police are out is comforting, you never know what some drunken person is capable of doing.
However, do they have to go into the clubs and bars? It seems like they go in just to catch an underage drinker who is having a good time. I know it is against the law to drink when you are not 21, but it is a college town. Seriously, what do they think is going on inside. It isn’t that fair to arrest one person when everyone around them is doing the same thing.
If the person is causing a disturbance on the streets or inside the club, then they should be penalized for their actions. I have no problem if someone is creating a public disturbance and gets caught. If you are going to drink, drink responsibly. Don’t get into a car when you’ve been drinking. If you do this, you should be caught because you are putting your life and other lives at risk. In order to have a good time people have to be safe, and the police in Milledgeville provide the safety. Once again, there is no reason why police should go into the clubs or bars looking for kids drinking. They already know kids are going to drink regardless. So, why go into the clubs just to bust them?
Most college students around the country drink when they are under age. Our parents did it, our older siblings did it and even the people who bust us did it. Other colleges provide transportation for students who have drunk a little too much that night; the only free ride we get is in the back of a police car. GC&SU did provide a transportation service for people who were drinking, but it was not fully taken advantage of, so it is not active anymore. So, if you are drinking, be careful and be safe. You never know where the police are and if you don’t want to get caught, play it smart.
