Sports teams head into home stretch
Golf
‘Cats hit well – The Georgia College & State University golf team recently competed in the North Shore Pfeiffer University Intercollegiate Tournament. With help from Freshman John Cronvall, the team tied for seventh place in a field of twenty teams.
Individual Scores – Cronvall finished at even par with scores of 74 and 70. Jose Martinez Medrano finished tied for 17th place with scores of 72 and 73. Carter Collins and John Tillery were tied with identical scores of 148.
Next up – The Bobcats will wrap up their fall season on Nov. 2-4 in Orlando, Florida. They will be competing in the Rollins Intercollegiate Tournament.
Cross Country
Strong showing – Crystal Sutton and Mandy Alliston ran record times at the Erskine Invitational 5k meet on Oct. 16. Their times helped the Georgia College and State University women’s cross country team to a third place finish. The men’s team was not as fortunate, finishing twelfth in a fourteen-team field.
Individual times – Sutton landed 6th place overall with a time of 20:06. Alliston was right on her heels with a time of 20:07. Mindy McCart, Kelley Fleischmann and Heather Irwin rounded out the top five for the Bobcats.
For the men’s 8k, Joe Bence was the top Bobcat finisher with a time of 31:28. Trey Bailey, Sean Fink and Josh Reed rounded out the top five for the Bobcats.
The next race – The Bobcats will wrap up the fall season next Saturday, Oct. 25th in Panthersville for the Peach Belt Conference Championships.
Basketball
Polls released – The pre-season basketball poll has been released for the Peach Belt Conference. The men’s team was picked to finish ninth out of a twelve-team league. The women’s team was picked to finish eighth in the PBC. Columbus State is the early favorite to win the men’s side, while Armstrong Atlantic State is favored to win the women’s side.
Tough season ahead? – The men’s team is returning only four lettermen to a team that finished sixth in the PBC South Division. The Lady Bobcats are coming off of their first losing season in eight years after going 13-16 overall and finishing sixth in the PBC South Division.
Soccer
“Hat Trick!” – Tami Pissott notched the first “hat-trick” in GC&SU history by netting three goals against South Carolina State. All of her goals were scored in the second half and helped the team overcome a first half deficient of 0-1. The Lady Bobcats came away with a 4-1 victory and raised their record to 3-6-1.
