Make a Difference Day brings hope

Baldwin County plans to salute others through community service events on Make a Difference Day, Saturday, Oct. 25.
Seven years ago, Baldwin County joined the mission of Make A Difference Day, which was created by USA Weekend magazine. This annual event takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. This is its 13th year. According to Director of G.I.V.E. Center Kendall Stiles, the mission of the day is to “celebrate neighbors helping neighbors.”
The theme for this year’s Make A Difference Day is “Saluting Those Who Served the U.S.” The focus will be on our veterans, particularly the Georgia War Veterans Home.
“This is an area where we need to say thank you, and it is wonderful to give back to the Georgia War Veterans Home,” Stiles said.
The Forward Baldwin Leadership Committee, chaired by Terry Kennedy, marketing and public relations director of Exchange Bank, is coordinating this year’s events.
“It is very rewarding to see others involved in the community,” she said. “I believe it is important that we don’t ever forget those who have done so much for us to enjoy the freedoms that we have.”
Last year, over 1,700 volunteers completed more than 100 projects. For the past years, the Milledgeville Community and GC&SU have received recognition from USA Weekend, and five years ago, Georgia Military College received a grant from USA Weekend, which was donated to the Baldwin County Boys and Girls Club.
So far this year, Phi Mu, Alpha Delta Pi, Gamma Sigma Sigma, Gamma Beta Phi, Habitat for Humanity and GC&SU freshman seminar classes have signed up to partake in this day.
“It is a national day of service, but it is also a good way for students to get introduced to service and committed to doing it more often,” Stiles said.
Several projects are already planned, such as Gamma Sigma Sigma working at the Baldwin Service Center; the Freshman Seminar classes are working at the Georgia War Veterans Home; Alpha Delta Pi is helping the Ronald McDonald House; Phi Mu is serving the Children’s Miracle Network; Gamma Beta Phi is helping the American Cancer Society; Habitat for Humanity is building a house and Big Brothers and Big Sisters is holding a Halloween Carnival.
“I think it is a great opportunity for people to go out and make Baldwin County a great place to live,” Stiles said. “I would encourage everyone to go out and make a difference that day.” Baldwin County plans to salute others through community service events on Make a Difference Day, Saturday, Oct. 25.
