Lee racks up on the court
With the end of the fall tennis season, the Bobcats continue to practice hard as they set their sights on the upcoming year.
One of the highlights from the tennis team’s fall season was the undefeated play of sophomore Brandon Lee. Lee went 7-0 this year in his singles matches. This is Lee’s second season as a Bobcat and he admits that his success is partially due to the experience he gained last year.
“The experience from last year has really helped, seeing what the college competition was like and getting to play more matches has allowed me to become better,” Lee explained. “I never thought I would go seven wins and no losses but consistency and putting the ball on the other side of the net allows the other person to miss.”
Brandon also hopes that his winning streak this fall season will give him the confidence needed to compete in the Peach Belt.
“My confidence is high right now, I think I could beat anyone I want,” said Lee.
While the fall season is short and only consists of three tournaments, Steve Barsby, head coach of the Bobcats, explained the importance of the fall play.
“Fall tennis is mostly individual play to decide pre-season rankings going into the spring,” said Barsby. “It’s a good basis to see what everyone has, what they can do, and the depths of the teams.”
This year, the women’s tennis team will try to match the success from last year’s winning season. Last spring, the women not only won the Peach Belt Conference Tournament but were also the NCAA National Championship Semifinalists. Barsby says that the team is not as deep as they were last year but they are getting a player in January who will hopefully add depth where the team needs it most.
“As long as the girls are clicking on all cylinders like they were last year, then I don’t see any reason why they can’t win the Peach Belt again,” said Barsby.
The men’s team will hopefully improve on last year’s record of 9-14. The men have four returning seniors and have added some new players to continue to build depth to the team.
So, be sure to check out the tennis teams when they return to action in the spring.
