Bellflower heads up new Wellness Depot
Meet Joe Bellflower.
He is the director of the two week old Wellness Depot.
“The position at the Wellness Depot provided a great opportunity to contribute, once again, to the opening of a new facility on campus, much as the Centennial Center did in 1989,” said Bellflower. “It also provided an exciting challenge to assume a role that is very visible and one that allows me to interact routinely with our students. I missed this interaction very much from my days in Centennial.”
As director of the Depot, Bellflower is responsible for managing the facility and its budget, supervising student workers, interns and those using the facility, scheduling and overseeing equipment, among other duties.
Bellflower graduated from Georgia Military Junior College, receiving an Associate’s Degree in 1970 and received a Bachelor of Science in Health, Physical Education & Recreation from GC&SU in 1972.
“While at GMC, I was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society and was named to Who’s Who in American Junior Colleges. I also attended GMC on a baseball scholarship,” said Bellflower.
Bellflower came to GC&SU in 1988 as a building manager for the Centennial Center. In 1995, he moved to Chappell Hall where he became an assistant to the dean of Continuing Education and Public Services.
“I really enjoy fishing and golf. I would definitely say those are my hobbies,” said Bellflower.
Prior to coming to GC&SU in 1988, Bellflower worked for nearly 15 years in municipal and therapeutic recreation and also taught/coached a year at John Milledge Academy. While working in municipal and therapeutic recreation, Bellflower served as the director in both the Fort Valley and Milledgeville recreation centers. He also served on the board of directors for the Milledgeville Baldwin County Convention and Visitors Bureau from 1999-2000.
Bellflower has been married for 37 years to his wife Joyce. Bellflower also has two children Jody, age 33 and Jay, age 28, as well as three grandchildren.
“The greatest aspect of the job is being in a position to work with and contribute to our students and to the campus community,” said Bellflower. “Right now, it’s exciting, challenging, and worth all the effort I can put into it.”
