Slam lifts Bobcats past Blazers
The Georgia College & State University Bobcats blazed a trail over the Valdosta State University Blazers Tuesday afternoon at John Kurtz Field.
The Bobcats were led the 8-2 victory by the pinch-hit grand slam by GC&SU infielder Tyler Folsom.
The Blazers struck the first blows outscoring the Bobcats two to one in the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth Jamie Langham hit a single up the middle and advanced to second base on a past ball by VSU catcher Brian Crawford.
Bobcat infielder Ron Womack drew a two-out walk to put runners on first
and second for GC&SU’s RBI leader Jose Leger (44). Leger drove in Langham from second to tie the game at two apiece.
Bobcats added two more run in the bottom of the fifth before everything started to fall apart for the Blazers.
Leger led the inning off with a single to left. He would end the day going
3-5 with one run scored and one RBI.
Bobcat catcher Eddie Campbell drew a walk on pitches that were heavily contested by VSU head coach Tommy Thomas. The next batter Matt Nixon takes ball four on a close pitch at the knees.
Thomas comes out of the dugout to contest the call and is tossed out of the game. Before he left he got in the face of the home plate umpire to get his money’s worth.
Thomas didn’t go very far though as he sat in the bleachers behind home plate.
“This is the first time I’ve been tossed out of the game this season,” said Thomas. “I just thought that his strike zone was very inconsistent in the first few innings.”
Folsom stepped up to the plate a drove the 1-1 pitch out to right field for the bases clearing grand slam.
“I was in a RBI situation and I was looking for a pitch for hit,” said Folsom. “I saw a change-up down the middle and I put the bat to it.”
That would prove to be enough as the Bobcats relied on the arms of Brett Newton and Jimmy Finley. Michael Buck got his first start in three years for the Bobcats. He earned the win with five complete innings, allowing only two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
“We played a good game today,” said Bobcats Head Coach Steve Mrowka. “Folsom came through big in a RBI situation, you like hitting like that. In the field I don’t think we committed a single error. Today we just played really good ball.”
