Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Should the military draft be reinstated due to our current state of war with Iraq? Should the United States draft men who are between the ages of 20 and 25 to be sent off to the front lines of war? Will the military need the help of men who have been drafted into the army during this war in Iraq? No, no, and no.

The current war with Iraq is a necessary move according to the Bush administration, and I agree. Saddam Hussein is a force that has yet to be stopped, and I believe that if America has to go to war to stop him, then so be it. But once Saddam is dead, and his Iraqi regime is destroyed, the mission will be complete.

To kill one man and his followers does not require a draft of the American people. The United States military alone has about 1.4 million active duty men, with another 1.3 million in the reserves. Yes, this is a smaller force than what was used during the Cold War, but the current situation in Iraq should not require more than 2.7 million people. Therefore a draft should not be reinstated for a war at this level. The men and women who have voluntarily become part of the armed forces chose this profession, and they should be able to do their jobs.

The Pentagon opposes the return of the draft for the war with Iraq, saying that the military is “experienced, smart, disciplined, and representative of America.”

I believe that with the current situation in Iraq, sending in people who haven’t been trained like the armed forces that are already there is not needed. I also think that much of the poorer population of America ends up being sent to fight, and the rich try and buy their way out of it.

If the current situation gets worse, and this turns into another World War with massive casualties, the draft might be necessary, whether or not we agree with it.

But until then, there is a time and place for everything, and I think America is right where it should be: without a mandatory draft.
