From the cheap seats

May is fastly approaching and for college students that means saying goodbye to some of our classmates. But sometimes we have to say goodbye to some of the faculty and staff.

I would like to take this opportunity to give my best wishes to some of the graduating members of The Colonnade staff.

Joseph Tkacik was the Variety Editor last semester and shared many of my passions such as baseball and totally useless Simpson’s trivia. JT didn’t come back as Variety Editor for The Colonnade this semester because of his approaching graduation and his marriage ceremony scheduled for June. I wish Pam and him all the luck in the world.

The Colonnade’s Web site operator Josh Aldredge (affectionately formerly known as Web Boy) re-wrote all of The Colonnade’s e-mail editions and copies on the website. Josh pulled double duty this semester working for the Colonnade as well as working for the Georgia College & State University’s television station. I’ll miss all of our fights (even though you do hit like a girl). I’m just kidding, good luck buddy.

Finally we come to Dr. Ginger Carter, assistant professor of mass communication, or Dr. G. Schomber (don’t ask). She is not graduating, but she is leaving The Colonnade once and for all. She has overlooked the operations of the Colonnade as its advisor for the last seven years.

After this semester she will be leaving to go teach in Belize for fall semester and when she returns she will not resume her role as advisor.

On a few personal notes, I would not be writing anything if it weren’t for Dr. Carter. From my very first year she has motivated me by not telling me if I did good and making me re-write an article sometimes three or four times.

I know that there have been times when she thought I disliked her and vice versa, but we’ve always found common ground to meet on and as the years went by we grew closer to becoming friends rather than student and teacher. Although, I’m still learning from her and growing as a writer from the knowledge that she passes on to me.

I’ve always respected her opinion and always hated the way she wouldn’t tell me the answers, but instead made me figure them out for myself. Her honesty can be harsh sometimes, but is never without just cause. If she thinks something is bad, she’s going to tell you.

If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t have gone to my first Colonnade meeting three years ago. If it wasn’t for her encouragement, I wouldn’t have came back for the next issue, because, let’s face it, my first few articles were not my best work. But she always asked me what I thought I could do better.

This isn’t really ‘goodbye,’ but more of a ‘I’ll see you later.’ I know that she’ll be back, but I wanted to take this opportunity and this forum to express the much respect and gratitude I have for Dr. Carter. She has been one of my greatest supporters throughout the years and I wish all the luck in the world in Belize and anxiously look forward to her return next semester so she can bust my chops again.
