The Voice
With the school year ending soon and graduation just around the corner, a lot of people may be looking back in retrospect at the year, reminiscing and regretting about not doing certain things during their time spent here at Georgia College & State University.
The Colonnade staff has compiled a list of things we regret not doing, and if we could go back and redo the whole college experience over again, these are the things we’d change.
First, we’d travel more. Instead of jetting out of Milledgeville to Hometown, Ga., every weekend, we’d go to places we’ve never visited. We’d also travel abroad. Of course, college years can be the epitome of being broke, but it’s possible to save up and go on fun excursions. We would definitely get on more planes, trains and automobiles.
Another thing we’d do differently, earlier in our college years, is discover all that Milledgeville has to offer, instead of dissing this small town and ditching it every weekend for home. Milledgeville really does have a lot to offer. We’d try out more restaurants that aren’t as popular among students as others. We’d go to Caf? South, Julian’s and Choby’s. (Hey, we haven’t graduated yet. We’re definitely going to make it to these restaurants before leaving.)
The Colonnade staff, in hindsight, would branch out more and make different friends – friends who we may not typically be friends with. The people we meet in life are what shape us and make us into the people we turn out to be. Friends are big influences in our lives.
We would have gotten serious about school a lot earlier. And we would have gotten more involved sooner. It seems like it wasn’t until junior year that most of us really got into school and serious about it. What were we doing the first two years? Who knows! And most of us didn’t get involved until our sophomore or junior years. We realized, at some point, that it’s good to be involved with things on campus. It’s not dorky; it’s rewarding. If only we knew that at the beginning…
Take more pictures. This is always a big regret: not taking enough pictures. You go through life, and you look back and wish you had photos of that certain experience, or person, or time. We wish we had more photos to take with us from these three or four crazy years at college.
Take advantage of front campus more. With the weather as beautiful and perfect as it’s been lately, it just makes us want to take a break from all the homework, projects, and insanity and go outside and relax in the grass on front campus.
Won’t you be my neighbor? Looking back, we’d get to know our neighbors better. If we could go back to the days of dorms, we would keep our door open to make friends and to meet more people in the dorms. With apartment neighbors, we would have invited them over for dinner and to hang out more.
There are some other fun and random things we wish we had done: swim in the fountain in front of Arts & Sciences; sneak into the basement of Parks, sing karaoke one more time; concentrate more on golf in high school to play on the golf team at GC&SU; go to the lake more; audition for a theatre production; walk in Adams or Wells once more before they were torn down; go see the Nuwabians and their pyramids; go see Laney Strickland one more time; and eat at SAGA a little more. And of course, go to more Bobcat Nights.
