Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor,
Sour grapes, bad whine
France’s support of the American Revolution had more to do with their historical competition and hatred of the British than it did for their love or support of the new American government. In any event, in today’s global politics many things change depending on national interest; and what have the French done for us lately?
They did not merely disagree with our war plans against Iraq, as friends can do, but vigorously campaigned around the world creating opposition to our efforts. This good friends do not do, especially when the primary motive is an attempt to cover up their covert activities in Iraq in defiance of U.N. restrictions and embargos.
As for the Statue of Liberty, the French made it, but America and Americans made it stand for what it means to all the poor, oppressed and down trodden people all over the world, including those in Iraq!
In regard to Mr. Gadbois’ naive (nice French word) position about the awarding of contracts to rebuild Iraq, it’s called “Political Patronage.” A practice as American as Apple pie, and should the Democrats, God help us, ever assume control over the Congress and the presidency again, they will favor those who have supported them. There is nothing sinister or illegal about this.
Mr. Gadbois should take his “sour grapes” to France and continue to make a bad “whine” there!

War
This war in the Middle East is like no other in the history of warfare. Nuclear and other scientific technology of every sort is being marketed by several large powerful countries that have the technology. They are willing to sell to countries that harbor, fund and support terrorist and their organizations. These countries provide a safe haven and a base of operation for these people that have a life-long desire to kill Americans and other freedom loving people around the globe.
Their resolve is so strong that they will even kill themselves to accomplish their objectives. We cannot sit back and allow terrorist countries to gain the capability that could destroy an entire country and civilization. Nuclear bombs, chemical and germ warfare could destroy the United States. We survived Pearl Harbor; we survived 9-11 by allowing our enemy to strike first.
We are at a time in history with all the modern scientific technology that we cannot afford another first strike. For our very survival we must never allow a first strike against this country again. We must have the capability to make preemptive strikes to those persons or county that plan to do us harm using nuclear, chemical or biological weapons.

No state flag needed
I vote with those many perceptive Georgians who say we do not need a state flag. Let’s fly Old Glory, the Stars and Stripes, in lieu of a state flag. We are all Americans. The state flag issue is divisive. It is also petty, compared to needs in education, medical care, state economy, the physically and mentally handicapped, etc. It also wastes taxpayer money – my money – by the hundreds of thousands of dollars, perhaps millions over time. If some Georgians need a particular kind of flag, let them fly it on their property, not on public property, not with my tax money. Let’s get on with the serious issues.

Dear Heavenly Father, our hearts are heavy as we walk in the valley of uncertainty. Our nation is at war, our economy is bad and the education of our children is far below the national level. Dear Lord we need your guidance. Lead our nation in paths of righteousness and submission to your will. Bless and keep us. Help us to be ever mindful of your love, mercy and grace. Amen.

Take a swim
I want to pay tribute to B. Marion Pennington for stepping forward and saying something that needed to be said. It is indeed time we took a close look at what’s happening in America.
When we subscribe to the wish of every group or individual wanting to change our customs, culture or way of life, we diminish what America is all about. In recent years our rights and customs are being challenged by a few and our laws have been changed as a result.
Ultimately our elected officials are responsible for the laws and they must be held accountable. Our duty is to elect only those who respect our way of life. As B. Marion Pennington said, this is America and we have a language, a culture and a lifestyle, either get on the boat or get out and swim.
