Gamma Sigma Sigma dedicated to community
The Gamma Sigma Sigma National Co-Ed Service Sorority is being honored for their dedication to community service by the GIVE Center during National Volunteer Month.
Gamma Sigma Sigma is one of several organizations, clubs and individuals being honored this month by the GIVE Center at Georgia College & State University. The selected people or groups are each honored for one day during National Volunteer Month.
Members of Gamma Sigma Sigma are pleased to take part in celebrating National Volunteer Month with the GIVE Center.
“The GIVE Center provides a wonderful opportunity to our group as a platform for volunteer work,” said Gamma Sigma Sigma President Maggie Huddle. “It isn’t always easy to find an outlet for community service in a small community like ours, but the GIVE Center works very hard to give the entire school a great database to start from.”
Service Vice President, Devon Sheppard, is happy for her fellow sorority members.
“I’m really excited about being honored this month,” said Sheppard. “Gamma Sigma Sigma has done a lot of work over the years, so it’s great to be recognized for it.”
All Gamma Sigma Sigma members are each required to participate in a minimum of 20 hours of community service each semester. Members participate in events year-round, such as Big Brother Big Sister and Relay For Life.
Making a difference in the lives of others is important to Gamma Sigma Sigma.
“Community service teaches you the importance of participating in the community and helping those less fortunate than you are,” said Parliamentarian J.W. Mozley. “We do over 1,000 hours of service work each semester as a group, and we really work passionately to help those who are disadvantaged within the community.”
The dedicated work of the Gamma Sigma Sigma members has made a significant difference on the GC&SU campus and in the Baldwin County community over the past six years.
“We are the only sorority on campus that is solely and completely dedicated to service work,” said active member Erin Semple. “The feeling of helping others is beyond comparison.”
National Volunteer Month is not only a time set aside in the year for honoring those who have worked and given so much of their time and themselves, but also for informing others of the work that still needs to be done.
“Community service can be a great niche and be really fulfilling,” said Mozley.
“I think it’s great for anyone to give back time, money or energy, especially when we’re in college and have the opportunity to give back to the community,” said Huddle. “You really never know when you may be the next person needing help from people around you.”
Volunteer workers are always needed because there are always people in need. Those who respond to this call often find that they get more in return than they gave.
“Volunteering gives us a look at the real world, and doing volunteer work gives you a different view of the world,” said Sheppard. “It builds self-esteem and makes you feel better as a person.”
The Gamma Sigma Sigma sorority has been honored for their dedication to community service work in the past by receiving the GIVE Center’s Giving Tree Award in 2002. This award is given to a person or group who has made an outstanding contribution to community service throughout the year.
“The GIVE Center is a great aspect of our campus, and we’re proud to be involved with them during National Volunteer Month,” said Huddle.
The close relationship between the GIVE Center and Gamma Sigma Sigma is rooted in a mutual desire for helping those around them.
“The enjoyment of the people we are helping is the best part,” said Semple. “Knowing that we are making a difference in their lives is wonderful.”
