‘American Idol’ comes to GC&SU
Georgia College & State University and Milledgeville residents team up to showcase the area’s finest talents in “American Idol- GC&SU Style.”
The talent show is sponsored by Campus Activity Board and will take place Thursday, April 24 at 8 p.m. in the Arts & Sciences auditorium.
Two CAB committees are putting on the event: the Cultural Diversity Committee and the Ideas and Issues Committee.
Marielle Gunasekera recently resigned from her position as committee chair for the Cultural Diversity Committee. According to Suzette Zompetti, Precious Jones, assistant director of administrations and the liaison to the two committees, will take Gunasekera’s place by helping the Cultural Diversity Committee co-sponsor the event. Emily Doyle is the committee chair for the Ideas and Issues Committee.
“We sponsored a talent show last year which was co-sponsored by those two committees and their chairs, and it was very successful,” said Zompetti. “It had a pretty high attendance rating and we just want to provide a forum for students to showcase their talent and have a good time while doing it.”
The talent show will represent talent from GC&SU as well as from residents of Milledgeville. This is one of the few events sponsored by CAB that incorporates people outside the college. According to Zompetti, this is a good way for the university to tap into the local community as well as market the institution to prospective students in the immediate area.
“We thought it would be a wonderful idea to bring the Milledgeville community [and] the GC&SU community together,” said Jones.
Jones was one of the student chairs last year that worked with the talent show, and she suggested the event idea to the two committees.
Auditions were held Monday, April 14 through Friday, April 18 in Chappell Hall.
Those who attend the show can expect a variety of acts.
“Anything and everything goes,” said Zompetti. “Last year we had poetry, songs, dancing, band performances, individuals playing the piano, solo acts and groups of students. There is a lot of diversity in the
acts.”
“The audience can expect to see wonderful talent ranging from singing, dancing and more,” said Jones.
GC&SU students and Milledgeville residents are encouraged to attend the show.
“I think it should prove to be a really good show,” said Zompetti. “In the past it has shown to be a good time had by all. I think it’s a great opportunity to be involved with the institution, and the acts have been always of good quality and pretty entertaining. I’m looking forward to it.”
Admission to the show is free. If you have any questions, please contact the Campus Activities Board at (478) 445-3200.
