The Voice
One afternoon and evening of music vs. several nights of cheesy fun. BAVA Fest vs. Bobcat Nights. Due to the Student Activities’ budget, one of them has to go.
This year, BAVA Fest isn’t happening, but quite a number of Bobcat Nights have occurred. From Wild Wild West to casino nights, every other Friday night there’s been something to do on campus.
If the staff of The Colonnade had to choose between BAVA Fest and Bobcat Nights, we’d pick BAVA Fest.
For those of you who’ve never been to BAVA Fest, it’s a day packed full of musical acts. Two years ago, we had Drivin’ and Cryin’ and Run DMC, along with Moonshine Still and Michelle Malone. Last year, Edwin McCain performed at BAVA. It’s an outdoor concert where people pack food and bring coolers full of beverages and park their lawn chairs and sometimes even couches, in a field on West Campus to listen to the musical guests BAVA has to offer. It’s quite an event that really has a lot of potential if it were planned and promoted the right way.
One reason we think BAVA Fest should win over Bobcat Nights is because the music festival would accommodate and entertain the entire student body. It attracts students who like to party and those who prefer clean, wholesome fun.
Bobcat Nights usually attract GC&SU students who aren’t avid downtown bar-hoppers. How many students, who really like to party and hang out downtown, would trade a Friday night down at the bar for a night of laser tag? However, these students would probably skip downtown one night for a music festival with good bands and performers.
And at the same time, students who frequently attend Bobcat Nights would also enjoy a day of BAVA Fest. Wholesome fun can be found at BAVA Fest. All in all, it’s something that everyone can enjoy-everyone from GC&SU students, to the University’s faculty and staff and their families, to people in the Milledgeville community.
Another positive aspect about BAVA Fest is that students at GC&SU can invite their friends at other colleges, such as Georgia Southern University and the University of Georgia, to come to Milledgeville for the weekend because there’s actually something to do that’s worth leaving those towns to come to Milledgeville.
The staff thinks that BAVA Fest, overall, suits the needs and wants of the majority of students at GC&SU compared to Bobcat Nights. We’d like to see BAVA Fest stay and Bobcats Night go. We’d like to have one awesome day in the sun, relaxin’ on the grass with a group of friends in front of a stage with great musicians. Keep BAVA.
