New bobcat email plan effective July 1
After much deliberation Bobcat E-mail is now an official means of notification for professors and students.
The new plan, starting on July 1, was initially brought up after many faculty members suggested that it should be implemented to make communications with their students easier and more reliable.
“This new plan will be a way to get notifications to students in a timely manner,” said Jim Wolfgang, chief information officer for the office of instructional and informational technology. “This will be much faster and much less expensive than sending out letters in the mail, which can be an ineffective means of notification sometimes because of how long it takes a letter to reach the sender.”
The plan was adopted by a 6-1 vote late last month after Wolfgang and Dr. Bruce Harshbarger, vice president for student affairs & dean of students, sat down with the Student Affairs Council to talk about the new notification plan.
“This proposal began with a recommendation from the university’s Technology Committee to the President’s Staff,” said Harshbarger. “They discussed it and referred it to the appropriate governance council for action. According to the GC&SU Statutes, the Student Affairs Council is the primary council for review of and recommendations concerning student services.”
The new means of notification will be run off of a web based interface that will be user friendly and similar to many of the .com services that many use every day, and for those students who don’t want to switch addresses to the new one provided by OIIT, Bobcat Mail can be forwarded to an already existing .com account that has the option to do so.
“Overall, this new way of notifying students and faculty is a more efficient way of keeping track of where they can be notified,” said Wolfgang. “People change e-mail addresses so frequently that this will help us to always have a means of communication with the students.”
