PR class puts on golf tournament
Who knew 20 people could put on a golf tournament?
True, the “Take a swing for CASA,” golf tournament is two and a half weeks away, but Valerie Andrews’ public relations campaigns class has been planning for it the entire semester.
“I’m very pleased with the progress of this class because they have been thinking like public relations professionals,” said Andrews. “I think this golf tournament will be a credit to their work.”
With a media relations sponsorship and event management teams and the addition of two account executives compiling weekly reports to Andrews, it can be hard for any of the students to fall behind in their work.
“I compile a weekly report, to let her know what has happened the past week,” said Angela Pentecost, one of the account executives. “Everyone works together. If we didn’t all work together this wouldn’t be possible.”
The sponsorship team has had several other organizations plan golf tournaments around the same time, so getting prizes was a little difficult.
“I sure hope this event is a success. We have all worked so hard on this as a class,” said Jennifer Graham, sponsorship director. “We call the eight counties that CASA deals with and try to get different prizes and or sponsorships for the event. We had a pretty good response, there are several other golf tournaments going on which hurt us a little bit, but for the most part we’re still good.”
The media relations team has done several things to inform the local media outlets of their upcoming event. The class put on a live remote in Hatcher Square Mall March 19 with Z97, informing listeners about their upcoming golf tournament.
“We sent out press releases for the local media, we also sent things out to the television stations, we also did PSA’s with radio stations. We have had a very good response with the local media,” said Kim Benfield, media relations director. “While at the live remote, we were able to raise some money but the biggest thing was just getting the word out about both CASA and the golf tournament.”
The event management team is responsible for the day of events, making sure all of the players are organized, a raffle and getting the food donated.
“We have been working on stuff for the actual day of the tournament,” said Shellie Cook, event management team director. “Everyone has really come together, I think this is a team project. I know this is a class and we do get credit for it, but it seems like we would have worked just has hard even if we weren’t getting a grade.”
The four-man scramble will be held April 21 at Harbor Club Golf Course at Lake Oconee in Greensboro.
