Hill shows off new sound in latest release
Faith Hill’s latest release, “Cry,” is different from anything we’ve ever heard from her before.
The CD hit the shelves in mid October, but we’ve still only heard two songs on the airwaves. The first was the title release. “Cry” did well on both country and pop radio stations, but it was clear from a first listen to the song that Hill’s style is deviating farther and farther away from that pure country sound that she was first introduced with.
The entire album proves to be different from Hill’s past releases. It has more of a jazzy sound, mixed with some rhythm and blues. “One” is a song that produces a different sound for Hill. It’s got a sassy, straightforward sound that Hill actually pulls off quite well. It’s different, but that doesn’t mean it’s not good.
“When the Lights Go Down” was the second song released from the album. This song takes us back to the Faith Hill we’re more familiar with. Hill goes back to her country roots, as she tells a story of living with regret when the day is done. This song was the title of her most recent television special and the video is currently climbing the charts on CMT.
Though only two tracks have been released so far, there are other songs on the disc that are sure to be hits.
Hill is known for her ability to sing a great ballad. “Beautiful” is a wonderful ballad. It too has more of a pop sound, but Hill sings it so wonderfully that all music lovers are sure to enjoy it. The same is true of
“Baby You Belong.”
Hill sang the song “Stronger” on a recent award show and the crowd definitely seemed to enjoy it. This is another song that hints at the more country side of Hill. It’s a great song about ending a relationship and moving on. It has a laid back and relaxing sound that listeners are sure to welcome.
Hill always makes an impact with her slower songs, and I’ve found that to be true for the songs on “Cry.” There are some great fast-paced and upbeat songs, but they don’t make nearly the impression that the slower songs do. “If this is the End” is another song that makes a great impression.
My favorite song on the album is the last track, “You’re Still Here.” It’s not a happy and upbeat song by any means. It deals with the loss of a loved one. The message in this song is really profound, and the music that accompanies it is absolutely beautiful. Hill shows off her vocal talents on this song more than on any of the other tracks on the album. It’s not one of the songs that requires her to hit an extremely hard note, but the quiet peacefulness and stability of her voice in the song is a reminder of why we all love Faith.
Faith Hill has proved time and again that she is a performer that can cater to all genres of style and music. She does so on every track of this latest album.
