GC&SU Golf team gets Best out of Clay
Junior Clay Best proves to be a great addition to the Bobcat golfers during his first season with the team.
Best is a General Business major from Twin City, where he attended Emanuel County Institute and was twice voted the team’s Most Valuable Player. He also earned All-Region Honors twice, during his high school career.
Best transferred to Georgia College & State University this year after attending Armstrong Atlantic State University for two years, where he was also a part of the golf team. He said that even though he first picked up a golf club at the age of nine, he has only been seriously competitive about the sport for about three years. Best said the part of golfing he enjoys the most is the competition.
“It’s addictive,” he said. “It’s just a test between yourself and the course.”
Bobcat Coach, Jimmy Wilson, said Best is always working hard.
“If I were to classify Clay, I’d probably call him a perfectionist,” he said.
Wilson said Best will continue to get better because of his determination.
Best also has great things to say about Coach Wilson.
“He’s real supportive,” Best said. “He’s always positive, never negative. He’s a friend. He’s there when you need him.”
Best said his golfing strategy has changed some over the years.
“The more you play, the better you get,” he said, noting that experience is the main factor in becoming a better golfer.
He said changes in mind set and learning how to score have helped him to improve.
In his spare time, Best said he enjoys fishing, hunting and spending time with his friends.
The Bobcats wrapped up their Fall season at the Rollins College Invitational Tournament at the Forest Lake Golf Course in Orlando, Fla. The Bobcats finished third in the tournament. Best tied for 18th place with fellow GC&SU golfer, David Robinson.
Best has played in all five events this season, earning an average of 75.08 and two top twenty finishes.
The spring season will start up in February and Best has high hopes for the team.
“We’ve got a lot of potential on this team,” he said. “As soon as everything comes together, we’re going to be tough to deal with.”
