‘Cats now 22-0 after sweeping KSU
Jennifer Joiner became Georgia College & State University’s all-time leader in career strikeouts and picked up wins in both games, as the Lady Bobcats remained undefeated at 22-0 with a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep at home over Kennesaw State, Wednesday at the Peeler Complex.
GC&SU (22-0, 2-0 PBC), now ranked no. 2 in the nation, won the first game over no. 22 KSU (17-8, 3-5 PBC) 2-0 and took the night cap 2-1. This marked the first time that GC&SU has ever swept Kennesaw State.
In the first game, Joiner tossed a complete game four-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts. She entered the game needing only five K’s to break the school record of 241 set by Michelle Mayne (1999-02).
Nickie Black’s sacrifice fly in the third inning scored Brin Davis from third for the first run of the game. Kristin Hughes added an RBI single in the fifth inning to plate Rebecca Heinicka for the only other run of the game. Heinicka went 2-3, while Diana Baruffa went 3-3 with a double to lead GC&SU at the plate in the 2-0 win. Janet Kearns (6-4) took the loss after allowing two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
In the second game, KSU scored first as Amy Middleton delivered an RBI double in the second inning to plate Kelly Lamb, giving the Lady Owls a 1-0 lead. The Lady Bobcats answered in the bottom of the frame, as GC&SU took advantage of three KSU errors to plate an unearned run. Still tied with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Black stepped in with the bases loaded following an intentional walk to Joni Frei and calmly smacked a run scoring single to left field to score Davis for the go-ahead run.
Joiner (12-0) came in relief and retired all nine batters she faced, collecting five strikeouts without allowing a hit or walk to get the win in the 2-1 victory. Tara Hrycuik (6-2) pitched well, but took the loss for KSU after allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits in a complete game effort. Aundrea Baker went 2-3 to lead GC&SU at the plate.
