‘Mystery guest’ to appear at Spring Concert

Some straight ahead jazz from Dizzy Gillespie and a secret “mystery guest” are the highlights of this semester’s Jazz Combo Spring Concert.

The concert will take place Tuesday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m.,in the Max Noah Recital Hall in the Porter Fine Arts Building.

“We hope to draw a diverse group of people. This will be a concert that everyone can enjoy. It’s not just for jazz fans,” said Tim Pietrofere, a trumpet player in the Jazz Combo and a GC&SU student. “We are all very excited about the concert.”

Dr. Ross Feller created the Jazz Combo at Georgia College & State University three years ago. It features seven to eight people.

The concert is entitled the “Straight Ahead Spring Concert.” It is the flip side to last year’s “Walk on the Wild Side.” The Jazz Combo will perform “Caravan” and “In My Solitude” by Duke Ellington. Tunes from Horace Silver, Benny Golson, Juan Tizol, Dizzy Gillespie and even a few originals will also be a part of the concert.

“‘In My Solitude’ is a wonderful ballad that was made famous by the vocalist Bille Holiday. It will feature Demetrius Nelson on vocals,” said Director and Performer Dr. Ross Feller. “‘Caravan,’ features exotic chords of Middle Eastern origin. Juan Tizol was Duke Ellington’s trombonist and we are to perform his ‘Perdido’, which is a tune made famous by Duke’s band and then by beboppers. Demetrius Nelson will also sing on ‘Perdido.’ We will also play some bebop by Dizzy Gillespie. A few songs we will perform by Horace Silver include, ‘The Preacher,” ‘Strollin,’ and ‘Song for my Father.’ The song ‘Killer Joe,’ by Benny Golson, will also be performed. The original tune we will play was written by Marshall Coats. It is called ‘For Gabriel.’”

There will also be a surprise mystery guest performer that Dr. Feller would not give any details on.

The cost of the concert is $2 for general admission and $1 for GC&SU students and faculty with valid identification

“The performances can get very crazy. Last year I ended up break dancing on the stage,” said Pietrofere. “It will be full of spontaneity.
