GC&SU tennis sweeps Fort Valley State
The Georgia College & State University Bobcats made quick work of the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University Tuesday afternoon at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility.
The women blanked FVSU 9-0, while the men snapped a three-game losing streak with the 7-1 victory. The women improve to 6-0 on the season, and the men improve to 4-7.
In women’s play, the Bobcats began the day by winning all three doubles matches. GC&SU’s tandem of Caroline Lefevre and Anna Shchupak picked up an 8-1 victory over FVSU’s Tasha Evans and Shemaka Josey to lead the Bobcats in doubles play.
Annika Persson and Kremena Vassileva defeated Janine Atkins and Latitia Adams with the 8-0 victory.
In singles action, GC&SU’s Mia Paavilainen defeated Evans in straight sets 6-0; 6-0, while Lefevre defeated Josey with the 6-0; 6-0 victory.
Shchupak won 6-0; 6-0 over Atkins, while Vassileva also won in straight sets for the Bobcats with a 6-0; 6-0 victory over Adams. Kelly Miller completed the sweep with a 6-0; 6-1 win over Courtney Smith.
GC&SU also picked up wins doubles and singles by default as the Wildcats did not have enough players.
In the men’s match, GC&SU quickly took the advantage by winning two of the three doubles matches. FVSU’s Tshaka and Kweka Symonette paired up for an 8-5 win over GC&SU’s James Gorin and Kris Popovic before the tandem of Thomas Karlsson and Per Schartum-Hansen won 8-0 over Jonathan Chaffin and Marshal Northington for the Bobcats first point. Brandon Lee and Mikael Pettersson picked up the second point doubles with an 8-5 win over Pat Lee and Robert Isaacs.
The Bobcats turned on the heat in singles play sweeping 5 of the 6 matches before rain canceled the final match. GC&SU’s James Gorin held on for the 6-3; 7-6 victory over Isaacs, while Schartum-Hansen defeated Kweka Symonette 6-2; 6-2. Popovic defeated Tshaka Symonette 6-4; 6-2 singles, while Pettersson defeated Lee in straight sets 6-1; 6-1. Brandon Lee won 6-1; 6-0 against Northington
The match between Thomas Hemmestad and Derrick Pace did not finish due to rain.
