GC&SU Tennis teams spring into action

Saint Leo

The No. 13 ranked Georgia College & State University women’s tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season with the 8-0 win over non-conference opponent Saint Leo University Tuesday afternoon. The men’s match was rained out.

In doubles play, the No. 1 tandem of Luiza Biktyakova and Mia Paavilainen picked up an 8-2 victory over St. Leo’s Krysia Scherlinger and Caryn Hague to lead the Bobcats. Caroline Lefevre and Anna Shchupak defeated Emily Lane and Anna Peterson 8-1 at No. 2, while Annika Persson and Kelly Miller provided a winning effort with the 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles over St. Leo’s Nikki Prack and Jennifer Eigner.

The Bobcats also swept in singles matches, although the No. 1 match was not played. At the No. 2 spot, Paavilainen defeated Scherlinger 6-0; 6-0, while Lefevre downed Lane 6-1; 6-2 at No. 3. Shchupak defeated Peterson in straight sets 6-0; 6-0 at No. 4, while Persson knocked off Prack 6-1; 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Kremena Vassileva easily defeated Morgan Mander 6-0; 6-0 at the No. 6 spot.

The GC&SU men return to action on Saturday for a pair of non-conference matches against Stetson University and Morehouse College at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility. The first match begins at 9:30 a.m. against Stetson.

Eckerd College

The Georgia College & State University men’s tennis team lost 6-3 to N. 23 Eckerd College on Sunday. GC&SU (2-3) trailed 2-1 after the doubles matches and could only muster a pair of wins in the singles matches. The GC&SU women’s tennis team won all three of its doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead, but the match was suspended due to darkness before the singles matches could finish. The women will complete the match on Monday.

In men’s play, the Bobcats picked up a win at No. 2 doubles as Thomas Karlsson and Per Schartum-Hansen paired up for a 9-7 victory over Sanjar Shodieve and Byron Kidd. James Gorin and Kris Popovic lost their No. 1 doubles match 8-4 to Eckerd’s Adrian Pagani and Renaldo Valor. Brandon Lee and Mikael Pettersson lost 8-3 at No. 3 doubles to Martin Balla and Andre Mihag.

In the singles action, GC&SU’s Popovic defeated Shodieve 6-3; 6-3 at No. 4, while Karlsson knocked off Kristian Jankovic 6-4; 5-7; 6-0 at No. 5.
