GC&SU Fencing Club fairs well

Georgia College & State University recently hosted the Georgia State Intercollegiate Fencing Championships.

The GC&SU men’s team had a great turnout of nine fencers, thus three teams could be entered in each event of Foil, Epee and Sabre.

MEN’S EPEE

1. Georgia College & State University Gold
2. Georgia Southern University (Rasco, Humphrey, McCarthy)
3. Georgia College & State University Brown

In the final match Georgia College & State University’s Gus Armstrong, Steve Rollyson and Ramon Figueroa beat Georgia Southern University 45-33. All three GC&SU fencers on the men’s epee team won all their bouts.

The GC&SU Brown team of Hunter Register, Tim McElrea and Sean Smolarek fought all the way to the end and lost to Georgia Southern University by 40-45; however, the most exciting event took place between the GC&SU Gold and GC&SU Brown team. The GC&SU Brown team of Register, McElrea and Smolarek decisively won against the GC&SU Gold team of Armstrong, Rollyson, Figueroa 45-38.

For third place the GC&SU Brown Team of Register, McElrea and Smolarek beat the GC&SU Blue team of Jacob Crawford, Trey Newberry and Sean Carnahan 45 – 33.

WOMEN’S EPEE

1. Wesleyan College (Moore, Kojak, Kerr)
2. Georgia College & State University Gold
3. Georgia College & State University Brown

In the final match GC&SU Gold team lost to Wesleyan College by 45-39. The GC&SU line up of Taylor Yeary and Liz Kauffman was short of one fencer and only lost by six touches. Wesleyan College also beat the GC&SU Brown team of Colleen Hicks and Becca Miller 45-27.

WOMEN’S SABRE

1. Wesleyan College (Moore, Kojak, Kerr)
2. Georgia College & State University Gold
3. Georgia College & State University Brown

The GC&SU Gold team of Kauffman and Yeary lost to Wesleyan College 45-40. These were close bouts all the way to the end for the GC&SU ladies.

The GC&SU Brown team of Hicks and Miller lost to Wesleyan College 45-30.

WOMEN’S FOIL

1. Georgia Southern University (Justman, Herrington, Bryant)
2. Georgia College & State University Gold
3. Wesleyan College (Moore, Kerr, Williams)

The GC&SU Gold team of Kauffman, Yeary, Becca Miller lost to Georgia Southern University 45-22. The GC&SU Brown team of Hicks and Connie Pinckney beat Wesleyan College by 30-21.

MEN’S SABRE

1. Georgia Southern University (Downing, Burch, Briceland)
2. Georgia College & State University Gold
3. Georgia College & State University Blue

The bouts were close all the way to the last rotation; however, during the last rotation Figueroa won all touches, but still could not make up the deficit. At the end Georgia Southern University won against GC&SU Gold team of Armstrong, Rollyson and Figueroa 45-40.

For third place the GC&SU Brown team of Smolarek, Register, McElrea beat the GC&SU Blue team of Newberry, Crawford, Carnahan, Yue by 45-42.

MEN’S FOIL

1. Georgia Southern University (Black, Watson, Garlow, Griffin)
2. Georgia College & State University Gold
3. Georgia Southern University (McGarry, Walling, Griffin, Schwartz)

The championship match was between Georgia Southern University A team and

GC&SU Gold team of Armstrong, Rollyson and Figueroa lost 45-28.

Third place went to Georgia Southern University B team when they beat GC&SU

Tim McElrea, Hunter Register and Sean Smolarek by 45-34.

In other events the GC&SU Brown team of Register, Smolarek and McElrea beat the GC&SU Blue team of Newberry, Carnahan and Yue 45-38.

The Georgia State Intercollegiate Championship closes the season.
