Dixie Chicks bring ‘Home’ good music
It’s been several months since the release of the Dixie Chicks’ latest album, “Home,” and the CD continues to produce hits and break records in the country and pop music genres.
The first release, “Long Time Gone,” came out this past summer. This song is representative of pure Dixie Chicks style. It has a great country twang to it that only the voice of the ever so twangy lead singer Natalie Maines can pull off. The song has a great sound to it and was a wonderful way to introduce their latest album.
The next release was “Landslide,” a cover of the popular Fleetwood Mac tune. I’ve always loved this song and I wasn’t sure how I would react to hearing someone besides Fleetwood Mac singing it, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. the “Chicks” show off their true vocal talent on this song and the harmony is absolutely beautiful. It’s a song with a powerful message, no matter who’s singing it.
I think their latest hit “Travelin’ Soldier” is probably my favorite of the releases. It’s a cover of a Bruce Robison song. I may be showing my age a little bit, but I thought it was a Dixie Chicks original until recently. They definitely know how to pick a good song. This selection tells a poignant story of a love born and lost during the most uncertain of times. It’s something that I think many people can relate to these days. The vivid illustrations give life to the song and the Dixie Chicks’ wonderful vocal talents bring the message home.
Now, there are other songs that haven’t been released that are also great to listen to. “White Trash Wedding” is one of the more lively songs on the album. It wouldn’t be the Dixie Chicks if they didn’t stir up a little controversy. If people know how to take it, it’s a pretty funny song. It’s reminiscent of the sounds of “Sinwagon” and “Goodbye Earl” from their “Fly” album.
Another interesting tune is “Little Jack Slade” in which the “Chicks” show off their instrumental talents in a purely instrumental song that Maines wrote for her son.
“A Home” is a song that tells the traditional country music kind of story of heartbreak and regret. It talks about the mistake of letting go of love and talks about waking up “in a house that might have been a home.”
My absolute favorite song is called “Godspeed.” This song is a lullaby and has a beautiful, peaceful sound to it. It sounds like a modernized lullaby that a mother would sing to her young son. One of the lyrics says “the rocket racers all tuckered out, superman’s in pajamas on the couch.” It’s the sweetest song on the album.
Other songs like “More Love” and “Truth No. 2″ are great listens. The whole CD is full of excellent selections. The Dixie Chicks have truly found great music again on their third attempt. I’ve said time and again that I think the best songs are those that tell a story. Well, I bet the Dixie Chicks could tell a few stories themselves. That’s what makes us love them, and this album has plenty of great stories to tell.
