Bowling team starts slow, finishes strong

The University of Georgia hosted the 2003 Association of College Unions International (ACUI)-Division I Intercollegiate Bowling Regional Championship Feb. 7 and 8.

The GC&SU men’s and women’s team were very optimistic for great performances at regionals. New members of the bowling club provided a large entry for ACUI Recreation League.

The GC&SU men’s team of Marcus Knowles, Rich Hardwick, David Krogh, John McAfee, Daryl Leslie and Andy Russell had a slow start with a team score just above 800 pins.

On Friday morning the GC&SU bowling team was fired up and with excellent bowling reached the magic number of 1000 pins. Knowles had the best game of 279; however, the men’s team did not qualify for the national finals.

FINAL TEAM STANDING – MEN

1. Central Florida University – 9190 pins
2. University of Florida – 8751 pins
3. Florida State University – 8724
4. Georgia Institute of Technology – 8439
5. University of Miami – 7723
6. Georgia College & State University – 7613

In the All Event individual standing the top bowler for GC&SU was again Knowles in 17th place with a total of 1692 pins.

The GC&SU women’s team finished fourth and qualified for the national championship. The ladies did their best and had wonderful spirit for the entire tournament.

The GC&SU ladies of Victoria Allen, Melissa Barkmeyer, Jami Kisida, Carolyn James and Sarah Dausner finished fourth at the end of the tournament. In the All Event individual standings Allen was 12, Barkemeyer 13 and Kisida 14.

2. University of Florida – 6844
3. Florida A&M – 6323
4. Georgia College & State University – 6059

The highlight of the day was that the GC&SU Recreation Bowlers were in the top three standings until the very end when they were moved out of the top two places by Bainbridge College. At the end Natalie Spires of GC&SU received her ACUI Silver Medal for finishing second in the All Event category. She is the fourth GC&SU bowler to receive the award. Kate Navo of GC&SU finished fifth in the All Event category as well.

In the Coed Team championship Michael Bui and Spires finished in third place. Ozie Foster and Navo finished in fourth place.
